Parents drinking beer while taking kids trick-or-treating?

Wow. The lushes all live in Northern VA. Do you guys drink when you mow the lawn?

So all the Halloween drinkers sound crazy defensive, and most of the non-drinkers sound crazy uptight. But honestly, it was freaking cold, I don't understand the appeal of walking around with a cold drink.

you clearly have never had an irish coffee. or just a bourbon and coke - my choice when tailgating in the cold.

Nobody could possibly care about adults enjoying a glass of wine or a bottle of beer amongst friends while walking around together for an hour. It is entirely appropriate and a great example of fellowship. Glad to see some parents/neighbors out there making friends and being social.

Do you need alcohol for this? What a shame!

I'm not the poster, but of course not. But you are missing the point. Many (most?) of us just simply don't see any harm. There is NO difference in my behavior if I am carrying a red cup around, drinking water, or carrying a red cup around, drinking wine. Seriously. Makes. No. Difference.

This whole notion of never drinking around or in front of your children or while your children are sleeping is nonsense. I am an adult. I know how to drink responsibly. I don't place undue importance on something this trivial. I quite honestly question the sanity (and yes, the parenting) of people who are soo crazy, judgmental, cut and dry about something like having ONE glass of wine around your children. I think YOUR children will honestly have the problems b/c your attitude toward something like this speaks volumes about you as a person and as a parent.

yeah, it is really bizarre. Beer and wine TASTE good. They are drinks commonly associated with social activities.

The prohibition talk is interesting. Great documentary on PBS recently about prohibition - amazing how much Americans drank in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Everyone just got hammered every day. So a reaction was actually needed.

I was carrying a mug of hot cocoa around the neighborhood with me while I took my darlings trick-or-treating. Now I am worried that my darlings thought it was alcohol! Do you think this will have a serious effect on their future? Maybe they will start having problems in school, or become strippers named Candy when they get older?! I feel so terrible now, my darlings probably think it is OK to drink and walk...

Again, maybe the whole NoCa thing - but it was not freaking cold! I wore sweat pants, and a long sleeve t-shirt. That's it. Same with my boys. We were walking around the entire time. I asked them if they were cold several times, and they said no. It was an absolutely beautiful night for trick or treating. Of course, we were in by 7:30, when the cold probably started to settle in for the night.

And yes, my neighbor was handing out shots of margaritas It was awesome! I had 3 small "shots" of a mixed drink that wouldn't even amount to one shot worth of alcohol.

Meant NoVa, not NoCa, but that would fit as well

No. But my father always used to drink a beer while mowing the lawn, and despite that my sisters and I are all generally upstanding citizens. But it might have been his poor influence that led me to having a drink while trick or treating on monday.

I'm usually no party-pooper, but it seemed kind of inappropriate to me. (Maybe because Halloween is such a kid-centric holiday, it seemed incongruous to be smelling adult beer-breath.) What do y'all think about it?

Unless they were drunk and causing problems what is your problem? Find a real problem!

You're missing the point. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a legal drug responsibly complying with the law. Everybody who took their open containers in a public place were breakig the law and thanks heaven nothing happened but I wonder what the headlines would be if any of those kids were hit by a car because mom or dad were too slow pulling them back to the sidewalk. You all drinking on the streets are guilty of public intoxication and this is gross. There's a time and place for enjoying alcohol and out on the streets while watching children is not it.

One or two drinks over several hours does not constitute public intoxication. And in Virginia there is no open container law, so no law was broken their either.

Two beers does not impare someone's ability to walk their kids across the street.
