Wed no school or 2hr delay?

PGCPS just closed through Thursday. I think MCPS will do the same.

There is no way, PP. Most of the county isn't plowed, they need two days (so Wednesday as well) if they're very diligent. I could see school on Thursday.

Where aren't the roads clear?

THE SIDE STREETS YOU DUMBASS. WHERE PEOPLE LIVE. My main street close to my house was only cleared this morning, but the neighborhood is still mostly unplowed.

More specifically. All the side streets I've driven by have been clear upcounty/midcounty. And my coworkers tell me their downcounty streets have been plowed.

Is the issue that people expect to see a full lane of pavement without any snow on it?

No. We haven’t seen a plow on our street. Silver Spring. This isn’t typical for our neighborhood, but here we are.

That’s really dumb

Not really. The writing is on the wall with temps this week and it allows people to plan. Taking it day by day is dumb.

No plow on our Bethesda street. Currently prediction from MCDOT is 9:00 pm.

Why can’t they move school online starting Wednesday? At least the kids would get some instruction in. It’s not like the infrastructure doesn’t exist post-Covid

Some schools moved to classroom carts this year because parents didn’t want 1:1. Those schools didn’t send Chromebooks home with students on Friday. No devices means no virtual.

Virtually all elementary schools are classroom carts only. So kids don’t have them.

My "primary route" neighborhood street in Damascus looks like it was plowed once during the storm but is still completely covered in snow & mainly ice. No way my little car can drive through that. It'll freeze more tonight and it's the bus route (includes several hills on the route as well) so I'm not optimistic.

Our school has classroom carts, but a couple years ago (back when virtual snow days were on the table) they sent out a form saying that anyone who wouldn't have a computer available for their kids on snow days was welcome to request a personal one to take home. We requested and got one. Obviously none of this works for this week, but it's doable for the future if they wanted to figure out how to make it work.

MOCO snow plow report estimates completion tomorrow (Tuesday) at 6pm. But a few hours ago, it said Tuesday @ 10:00am. Who knows.

Not appropriate for young kids

UMD is closed tomorrow. If they can’t clear their lots and/or don’t expect adults to be able to make it in, it’s logical that nearby school systems will also close.

They got more freezing rain over. In most of MoCo it was mostly sleet which is still challenging to clean but more feasible and less slippery (but still slippery!)

So if young kids can’t be educated, MS and HS kids who live on their chromebooks can’t be educated.

MCPS already announced it was closed Tuesday back on Sunday. This isn’t news.
