OP here. Proud alum of Michigan EECS and attended every home game from 99–03 during Carr/Brady/Henson era. No other intentions beyond hearing from an academic-focused, non-football crowd away from A2.

DP. If it reassures you, my junior, female interested in ME from out of state, not only wouldn't care about this scandal, but is unlikely to ever hear about it unless I tell her, or unless she gets in and starts paying attention to football. The school's reputation in engineering is intact.

Really, though, what aspect of this is a stain on a school - of what, 30k undergrads? - that is going to keep applicants away? This one jerk is a spec of dust, who is not only gone but wasn't involved with academics in the first place.

I do understand that Northwestern - where I also have an engineering student - lost a coach under controversy. May have it affected football recruiting, sure, but not applicant volume, no.

Stick to r/uofm where the other EECS people hang out en masse. You are just lending legitimacy to the idea that what happens with semi-pro sports matters a lot to the university experience.

Believe it or not, it's completely possible to enjoy being a Michigan STUDENT without paying attention to anything concerning the football team. It can even be fun to be a fan of a bad team, were it to come to that. And nobody would even notice if Michigan apps fell by 25% other than the raw counts. To me this is just another of the endemic scandals in the college athletics space. Blah blah blah.

I'm glad they fired this guy as well as all the other prominent criminals and policy violators that have been brought down across academia and sports and business and government. They know the rules and flout them anyway. I don't want these people in charge of my economy, my government, my education, or my entertainment. Keep brooming them out and then maybe future jerks will think harder before deciding to do dumb/immoral/illegal things.

Lol, I’m a middle aged suburban MD mom whose Instagram algorithm is full of cute animal videos and cooking reels, and I learned about this scandal on Instagram, where I have never watched any reels on U of M or college football before. This is a juicy scandal people are talking about.

Yes, and it only opens on certain dates which they carefully tried to avoid. Recruits next year will be able to back out, but other current players not so lucky.
