Is it even safe to send in the passport?… part of me is afraid they won’t send a new one back and then I have no proof.
Anyone send theirs in recently for renewal?

You really think some consular officer is going to keep your passport because you're a minority? You do realize how progressive the State Department workforce is, right?

This level of hysteria is not relatable to most Americans. This is like when people were upset that people were running outside or playing tennis outdoors without a mask in 2021. It makes people think, "what kind of mental illness is this" vs "they have a great point and I should join them."

+1. I am not a Trump supporter and think that he’s doing a lot of damage, but come on. This level of paranoia is concerning and does not inspire confidence in people who are suggesting stuff like this is likely to happen.

So, not-a-Trump-supporter, please tell us exactly what is “likely to happen” and how you know this, so that the rest of us can prepare for it.

Also, please note if you’re not a member of a minority group — since that may impact your ability to accurately assess “paranoia” with respect to people whose individual and collective lived experiences might have been very different from your own. TIA

PP here. I’m a visible minority (Indian heritage) with immigrant parents who are naturalized citizens. This administration is pretty unpredictable, so I’m not making predictions about what is likely to happen.

I’m simply saying, I think people who are urging U.S. citizen minorities to “carry their papers” because being non-white apparently makes you vulnerable to random detainment (and deportation?) on the street by ICE are being insane. I do not think I’m in danger walking to work, running on my usual path, going to the grocery store, eating in restaurants, or doing any of my day to day activities. I absolutely think people who are suggesting this are being hysterical.

If I worked in a meat processing plant that employed a high number of undocumented workers, then yes, I would probably bring my citizenship documents to work in case of a raid. That’s not what the argument here is about.

Yep who could have predicted this? Everyone! If the Feds take your identification and “lose it” you are undocumented. You will be deported even if you are a US citizen.

They are demanding papers of everyone. why are

In which countries abroad is it not recommended that you carry your ID?

Zero.

I am nervous because I was not born here but am a naturalized citizen. I am out with my kids alone a lot. I sincerely cannot imagine what would happen if ICE took me and just left my young kids to fend for themselves.

Yes, I think I would.

ICE doesn't care if you have your DL. See video of Americans WITH IDs being detained.

Only if you are not white. My white immigrant DH has nothing to worry about. Me, and my kids who don't look white, oth, ...

It will not do any good. They are deliberately not identifying people when they pick them up. Quite a few US citizens have been arrested and have not been heard from. They just do not care about the laws and right or wrong.

Tell us about just one.

Here’s one of the many out there. Do you read anything besides Fox? And these agents don’t look like real agents.

Haven't heard of any American blacks being caught up in the immigration thing. What my black friends talk about is how the other races were so afraid of being "othered" and want to be white and assimilate so badly, they are SHOCKED that they are being targeted. It's as if black people didn't try to warn y'all it wouldn't go well.

I don’t think Latinos are “shocked” that they are targeted. They’ve been mistreated for a long time now. Also Black Americans are no more likely to be profiled than White Americans. Black Africans are being targeted though, there are not nearly as many as Latinos so there’s not as much news.

Meanwhile Jews are treated total differently. Just some unproven complaints of “antisemitism” from an anonymous source and the FBI, DHS, etc roll in and arrest everyone. Every other minority is being singled out for racist treatment.

My black friends are not worried. Honestly, our chances of being detained are much smaller. I'm speaking about American blacks. I think Africans have a lot more to be concerned about.

People are being detained even with IDs. Maybe we all need to bleach our skin and dye our hair to try to pass for legal.

They are starting with one group: hispanics. This is a very diverse area in the DMV. I have truly diverse acquaintances, from the Middle East to West Africa, South Central Asia, and India.

Will the outskirts of Embassy Row, Bethesda, Tysons have the same ICE raids as Montgomery County and Manassas, VA? Is Alexandria, VA’s diversity safe from being profiled?

Everyone I know has a valid concern HERE in DMV, especially the natives. This is our home.

Over a (sharp) public dissent from the three Democratic appointees, SCOTUS clears the way for the Trump administration to remove migrants to third countries *without* giving them an additional opportunity to contest whether they face persecution or other forms of mistreatment there:

I mean, what happens if the person they are sending away is, you know, an American? THAT IS WHY SOME SORT OF DUE PROCESS IS NECESSARY.
