You really think some consular officer is going to keep your passport because you're a minority? You do realize how progressive the State Department workforce is, right?

This level of hysteria is not relatable to most Americans. This is like when people were upset that people were running outside or playing tennis outdoors without a mask in 2021. It makes people think, "what kind of mental illness is this" vs "they have a great point and I should join them."

No this rational thinking. Though having your “papers” really will not help you. If they stop you they are taking you with or without papers. They do nit check the papers.

You don't need papers. You just need to blend in and use Professorio Cheech's teachings on waas sappening: https://www.tiktok.com/@cheechandchong/video/7205760536342973742

Haven't heard of any American blacks being caught up in the immigration thing. What my black friends talk about is how the other races were so afraid of being "othered" and want to be white and assimilate so badly, they are SHOCKED that they are being targeted. It's as if black people didn't try to warn y'all it wouldn't go well.

A Black person with a Nigerian/Haitian/etc.. accent should absolutely carry their US passport card.

I meant Black American with a history back to slavery in America.

To add, for many of us, the issues we deal with are not just how we self-identify— but how others, including LEO choose to identify us, and act accordingly.

This! Your threat level is based on how other people, especially LEOs instructed to racially profile people, would identify you. My family is mixed. My father has blonde hair and blue eyes. He's fairly safe, despite identifying as a biracial/black man. My mother looks black and has a slight accent. She's less safe and has been carrying copies of her documents proving her American citizenship. All of us have the number of an immigration attorney in our phones, as well as information about our rights when dealing with ICE.

I said this is how this would go long before the election. People on this site told me I was being hysterical. Don't let a bunch of internet numpties convince you that you are overreacting. Do what you need to do to protect yourself and your loved ones, and then continue going about your business as best you can.

I, for one, was right there with you. The rhetoric and actions have been obvious for years. History is repeating itself and it is up to We the People to stop it, because it won't be the media, attorneys or other politicians.

+1. I am not a Trump supporter and think that he’s doing a lot of damage, but come on. This level of paranoia is concerning and does not inspire confidence in people who are suggesting stuff like this is likely to happen.

So, not-a-Trump-supporter, please tell us exactly what is “likely to happen” and how you know this, so that the rest of us can prepare for it.

Also, please note if you’re not a member of a minority group — since that may impact your ability to accurately assess “paranoia” with respect to people whose individual and collective lived experiences might have been very different from your own. TIA

PP here. I’m a visible minority (Indian heritage) with immigrant parents who are naturalized citizens. This administration is pretty unpredictable, so I’m not making predictions about what is likely to happen.

I’m simply saying, I think people who are urging U.S. citizen minorities to “carry their papers” because being non-white apparently makes you vulnerable to random detainment (and deportation?) on the street by ICE are being insane. I do not think I’m in danger walking to work, running on my usual path, going to the grocery store, eating in restaurants, or doing any of my day to day activities. I absolutely think people who are suggesting this are being hysterical.

If I worked in a meat processing plant that employed a high number of undocumented workers, then yes, I would probably bring my citizenship documents to work in case of a raid. That’s not what the argument here is about.

The irony is that if you took the advice that the white people who would urge someone like you to carry your passport on your morning jogs, you'd *actually* experience direct harm. It's like they need to inflict harm on minority people so they can say "look what Trump did." It's sick.

Thanks for such a thoughtful response. I really am glad that what you’re describing works well for you.

You may not realize that some of us — yes, US citizens who are minorities — already get pulled over by cops for “suspicious” behavior or “broken taillights” and such, and that those situations can escalated when standing up appropriately is deemed “resisting arrest”. Having ICE — often people not in uniform, with minimal training, added to the mix makes many minority communities much less safer, and much more vulnerable.

I really am glad that this is not your lived experience. You might, however, stretch yourself to understand that your own experiences — Indian heritage — may be, in at least some very critical ways very different from members of other groups : African Americans, Native Americans, Latino Americans among them.

tldr: Your perceived lack of danger does not necessarily reflect my actual risks.

What do you think this argument is about? I think it’s about whether some members of some minority groups might be at least marginally safer if they were in a position to immediately prove that they are US citizens, or legally eligible to be in this country.

You might find this educational, even if you don’t think it could ever apply to you or to anyone you love.
