The whole idea behind a potluck is that you contribute in food instead of in money. The host can't have it both ways.

Our block party has the burgers/hot dogs catered (food truck thingy), and I think it was something like $20/adult and then people brought drinks and apps/desserts.

You get burgers at Red robin too (with fries and condiments) for $15. This is host is tacky for charging $20 per head for a burger they are grilling.

You think Bill Cooper of 157 Oak Street has the same purchasing power as a multibillion dollar corporation?

Bless your heart.

You guys just keeping making assess of yoursselves

Eh my kids sports team always charged $20 per head for food after a game. It seemed like a lot at the time (for a sandwich or pizza or whatever) but I think ice, cups, napkins, table covers etc add up and it wasn’t so unfair considering they did all the work

This seems ok to me. Bring a few drinks or cookies or nothing at all if you feel cheated.

Liar.

To close a street for a private event in Fairfax County you need a Road Use Permit from VDOT.

And you also took a potluck meal to the after games?

The problem here is they are bringing a food dish and their own booze AND have to pay $20 for the burger.

If I were the host I would just ask for the potluck, have a sign up genius and add the burgers to the sign up genius so those who don't want to cook could pick up a few boxes and bring it. I would cover the rest.

Being smart has gone out the window.

Yes, we were encouraged to bring dessert or something else to contribute.

I seriously doubt the OP will be turned away if she doesn’t bring the right food. As I said, if she feels ‘cheated’ she can always just be skimpy with what she brings. A few sodas and some cookies.

This is hardly something to get so upset about. And I’m sure these rich people are hiring people to help with set up and/or cleaning. 20 dollars is really not that much, especially now.
