Why wouldn’t they apply if they have a high GPA when UVA doesn’t require test scores? If UVA thinks test scores are important, they will start requiring them. For now, those 1200-1250 SAT kids have a great chance to get in TO and we actually know quite a few that have been admitted in the last 3 years!
Because 71% of accepted students DID submit their scores. You significantly reduce your chances with test optional. Also, you need to have the support of your public high school counselor who submits their own LOC, checks off the "most rigorous" or less box, and works to get the high school faculty to out together the LOCs. Our high school advisor was blunt that our DD didn't have a shot at UVA. She was right. All it took was one look at the Naviance records of prior Lengley kids who had gotten in to see that. So, we put together a reasonable list of reaches, targets, safeties and saved the UVA application fee.
