Because 71% of accepted students DID submit their scores. You significantly reduce your chances with test optional. Also, you need to have the support of your public high school counselor who submits their own LOC, checks off the "most rigorous" or less box, and works to get the high school faculty to out together the LOCs. Our high school advisor was blunt that our DD didn't have a shot at UVA. She was right. All it took was one look at the Naviance records of prior Lengley kids who had gotten in to see that. So, we put together a reasonable list of reaches, targets, safeties and saved the UVA application fee.

Not sure 71% is right. According to SCHEV for 2024 admits, out of 3974, 1809 submitted SAT and 548 ACT. Thats 59%.

and some will submit both .. so less than 59% ... maybe close to 50? or 55?

You don’t have to be a captain or leader of something at school. They do look for leadership traits but that could simply be expressed in so many ways other than a club or sport .

There is definitely a chance, based on the presentation from the admissions office before the tour earlier this month. Other options could definitely be on the table, but it sounded like they wanted current juniors to be prepared in case they do need a test score.

Well, I definitely got the 71% when I googled. Coukd be stats from a different year. It's only 12% apart.

NOVA-EA
GPA: 4.3, 17 APs. Good AP scores but did not submit.
SAT: 1330 (TO)
Unhooked but lots of EC with leadership roles.
Took foreign language to level IV in 10th grade, but nothing in 11th or 12th.

Also got into UNC and Michigan with these stats.
