Who even participates in these things? I have never been able to take niche seriously about anything

Straight from their website, they admit that the "rankings may be inaccurate if Niche is supplied with inaccurate data from schools, data sources such as the US Department of Education or spam and automated 'bot' reviews." So I'm sensing it's not all or even mostly real people.

That's an even stronger evidence that some if not most of the reviews are fake.

The #1 self-created Niche ranking was literally the only thing that allowed BIM families to look in the mirror and convince themselves that they went to a real school that wasn’t owned by a Chinese private equity firm with ties to the Chinese government.

“We’re #2” doesn’t quite have the same ring. Of course, the overall Chinese economy has also been struggling so perhaps the government is spending more on dealing with empty apartment buildings and financial stimulus than bots to populate Niche.
