William & Mary admission rates

Yes, UVA has a lower acceptance rate as it offers engineering and bigger sports, etc. which W&M does not. So, it appeals to a larger group of prospective students. No hard feelings, why would there be? (at least not from me).

W&M has always been a bit more self-selecting due to its size, location and other factors including no engineering department, etc.

SAT/ACT test result submission is rapidly declining at both, but they are pretty much equal in the percentage that still do.

In my personal view, purely looking at admission % and caliber. Yes, UVA has a lower admission rate, but the caliber of kids getting into either is pretty much equal.

Let you kid decide which one is the better fit/offer for them. Visiting both, they should have a clear preference.

Yep. The caliber is the same and been the same for decades. The number of out-of-caliber students applying is higher for UVA. And going to my friends graduation - both camps seem to graduate with the look of a battered wife. No idea what kind of program humbles a 4.0+ kid. On that note - the VA Tech kids seem to run out of graduation like Vikings in spring time. The GMU kids look like nothing's changed - its part of life Man!

so funny that describes the grads we know as well

Are you saying UVA and W&M grads don't appear to have enjoyed their experience while VT grads did? That isn't my perception.

My impression is that W&M students aren’t the typical rah rah live out loud type to begin with. They chose W&M for a reason. They have fun, but it’s low key and just because they aren’t hopping on each others backs and whooping it up as they walk across the stage does t mean they didn’t have a great experience.

What do you think of DD's chances?

MCPS OOS
3.9 UWGPA; 4.7 WGPA
Test optional
Strong ECs - regional/national recognition
Good recommendations
Musician
Demonstrated interest (but not ED)

Naviance says W&M is a solid target.

Looks like a target if in-state, not sure about OOS. Maybe a reach due to that and TO.

I’d say target. 40% of the applicants were admitted TO last year. And I think the same percent were from OOS.

Would you need merit aid if OOS? I think that’s the rub for many high performing kids from MCPS. It’s just not worth OOS tuition with UMD in the mix. And if your kid can get into W&M, they can probably get into UMD too - maybe with a bit of merit.

Does anyone think the falling ranking of W&M will result in lower caliber applicants, especially OOS?

My kid got in RD OOS last year. Male, 3.8 UW, 1500+ SAT.

PP- my point is, still very accessible for OOS applicants who don’t have a flawless transcript or 12+ AP’s

1500+ isn’t exactly accessible

DP here. Thank you. Lots of very smart kids can’t get there, even with a ton of work.
