| I'm not in VA, just trying to understand how competitive it is to get in. I'm seeing in-state/out-of-state admission rates for W&M as 39%/28%, which doesn't seem terrible. But the reputation in this forum is that it's a super tough admission. Is that because there's so much competition among the NOVA kids? |
| Probably. Do you have a son or daughter? If son, more likely to be accepted as the gender balance is out of whack. |
| W&M is a very competitive admit because it’s a fairly small school and there are so many highly qualified students from Northern Va who apply. The school wants to have geographic diversity in its student body, so applicants are really competing with the other applicants from their high school. Think of how many students apply from Lake Braddock or West Springfield or Fairfax HS or …? W&M can’t take them all, even if they are very highly qualified. W&M is a public college that serves the entire state, so it wants students from Roanoke, Norfolk, and Danville as well. |
That’s nearly all schools. Not just W&M. Look at the gender numbers at other schools, too. More women are pursuing higher education than men. |
I think engineering is still dominated by boys. |
| W&M is interesting and has a definite unique vibe versus a general one you get from most college campuses. I’m sure it reduces the applicant pool from a love it or hate it standpoint. |
True. Schools like VT with a large engineering program will have a higher percentage of men. 57% male/43% female. UVA is appx. 60% female/40% male, which is not much different than University of Mary Washington (which people tend to think of as all female) but is actually 65% female/35% male. |
W&M doesn't have a super low acceptance rate, but the enrolled stats are relatively quite high. That probably explains what you said above. The applicant pool is not as big as other schools, but it would appear to be relatively qualified. W&M posted the first stats for class of 2028 in the link below. SAT Mid 50% of 1530-1400 and ACT Mid 50% of 34-32. That is pretty high, along with an average GPA of 4.35. These are of course test optional and post Supreme Court ruling stats. https://news.wm.edu/2024/08/23/a-bright-future-meet-william-marys-class-of-2028/ |
It couldn't possibly be that since there are no quotas. |
Men. Boys don't attent college. Men do. |
Interested in paying $70k for an OOS public? https://www.wm.edu/admission/tuition/ |
| W&M has both ED1 and ED2 (I think the only VA public with both) and they take the vast majority of their students through one of those. It's a much easier admit if you go that route. |
Nationwide entering college classes are about 60% Female and 40% Male. |
It is about 40% through ED1/ED2, not vast majority. |
Yes and women go too....tired of constantly hearing women referred to as girls. |
