Special Education is left out of the article.

Is this merely an assumption from the OP that they will be placed in Special Education positions, or is MCPS leaving this detail out purposefully?

I’m guessing they get paid a good bit less than MCEA pay scale but I’m not sure.

They are paid via a private company/contract. I cannot imagine they are getting close to MCPS teachers. They'd be lucky to get minimum wage.

Not sure if it's purposeful but it is primarily for special education

Pare ts, you would be up in arms with placards in front of central office of mcps decided to solve its math teacher shortage by importing a large group from the Philippines.

It's outrageous that mcps treats it's Special Needs children this way. What a disgrace!

Oh dear Jesus! I cannot with MCPS.

If they were skilled in math, it would be a better fit, especially for the advanced math classes that not all schools have.

They were forcing teachers into retirement due to the budget. The shortage is because of the BOE mismanagement of funds so they claim they don't have enough funding to pay teachers when they do.

They are very well trained teachers and our math teacher from the Philippines is awesome. If it weren’t for the behavior issues, they’d be fantastic.

Seems like this is not a unique situation to MCPS and an opportunity (sorry about the paywall)

If it weren’t for the behavior issues we’d all be fantastic teachers.

Ha ha. Well said. Cell phone issues and behavior issues are incredibly draining

I’m guessing they are better at math than at special education. Isn’t special education an afterthought in the Philippines. They will be shocked at the number of kids with ieps and 504s and all the different accommodations given in the US. Not to mention the combative parents

Only As far as somebody coming from a different country.

An au pair has a fully furnished room with a fully stocked kitchen and all they really need to bring is a suitcase, full of clothing and personal items.

It sounds like these women were only allowed to bring a suitcase with personal items and have nothing else to make a temporary life here.

This is not like an au pair program or even like hiring your average teacher. If the county wants to engage in this kind of program, then they should be providing them with housing with the basic living necessities. They should not need to crowd source for pots and pans.

+1. Au pairs also have their hours capped at 45 per week. Anyone who thinks a new special ed teacher will be able to get the job done in 45 hours per week has never taught special ed. I'm a veteran special ed teacher and almost never work less than 50 hours per week, usually closer to 60.

I would love to know how much these teachers are getting paid and what the agency is pocketing. Are they eligible for health benefits?

Remember. only work 40 hrs per wèek, no more. If your principal want to bully you for more you tell them to go bully their own kind or ypu will report them to the authorities. Its time to end the abuse and harrassment of teachers.
