Treatment of New Special Ed teachers hired by MCPS

Anonymous
I am not surprised at all. MCPS cuts corners every which way it can. Except for when it comes to top compensation for chiefs in CO.

I just heard about this program in Mcps and am shocked! I am a certified teacher with 17 years experience primarily in special education with good reviews and got rejected by Mcps. This is not the way to support our students. I hope they have a. Solid mentorship program in place as these teachers will deal with culture shock, isolation and alll the other things that are driving teachers to leave the field

Why are you shocked?

Average Joes are not applying for enough of the special ed teacher jobs.

This. They are filling jobs that MoCo residents have turned down.

This is how the Filipino teachers throughout the US are contracted.

I'm sorry but how is this fair? Do other teacher recruits receive these benefits?

No. Not if they're hired from anywhere else in the U.S

They have a massive budget but it all goes to things like RJ and SEL training or EV busses. There's not a lot leftover for education and with 300% more kids with a diagnosis that require special ed than just a decade ago it's hard to make this work.

Clearly neither of you have taught outside the US. Housing is a standard benefit for foreign teachers. I taught in Central Europe before I taught for MCPS. The company I contract with negotiated housing for us. A few friends have taught in the UAE. Their benefits included housing and a driver. I have friends whose kids taught in East Asia. They all got housing and free meals.

What part of it? MCPS confirmed the hiring of teachers from the Philippines months ago. However, the crowd sourcing of furniture is not someone I've heard.

Please cite the source where MCPS confirmed the hiring of teachers from Philippines.

I see no confirmation on any of this except reddit and like forums - just seems fishy would be happy to help if it looked a bit more above board and less generic

When I taught in the public schools in Japan, they provided my housing and paid half the rent! Here it is hard to even find housing or get a credit card without a credit history.

MCPS has never broadcasted this anywhere amount all of the emails they sent out or issues discussed at the board of ed.

My sister and two cousins taught in Asia. In Japan they got a basic apartment provided. In China my cousin got a luxury apartment and a MAID!
I feel sorry for these teachers that they don't know what they're getting into. We hired a bunch of newly trained staff at my hospital and they are living as boarders with people from their home country who are already here. They don't have cars so they Uber to work every day and are always late. They thought there would be usable public transportation.

Relying on Uber is $$$$ too.

Can confirm the placement of special education teachers from the Philippines. The school I work at got a placement and I know of another school that got 2. I hope they provide some extra support and training. It is unreal to me as a special education teacher of 30 years that this is the plan rather than working to make the job demands more reasonable as compared to other teacher jobs. This is not just MCPS’s problem though.

OP here. My neighbor just posted a photo of the teachers in training, and she’s a teacher herself. This seems legit but I’ll wager the only way to get MCPS to confirm is for someone to get media to do a story and voila, they’ll have to confirm.
