UVA just offered spots to 57 people on its wait-list.

This is surprising to me since the vast majority of schools, including UVA, haven’t released financial aid packages yet because of the FAFSA debacle.

UVA probably knows that a lot of people will make decisions without financial aid because they will most likely not qualify for it or have the money saved for full pay at UVA.

True. Likely hedging their bets by letting in more full-pays.

In the meantime, my kid was accepted with merit to multiple equivalent or higher ranked schools from out of state, such as Michigan.

If they were offered a waitlist spot now, they would turn it down.

This is my 2nd kid in 3 years that this has happened to at UVA (waitlisted while lower stat kids were accepted.)

It has really soured me on UVA.

Congrats to those who moved off the waitlist!

Wow I didn’t think Michigan gave merit to OOS kids. How much did your son get?

There "or" indicates a break between merit and higher ranked.

Multiple schools with merit.

Multiple higher ranked schools such a Michigan and top 5 to 20 schools.

Waitlist at UVA.

Not my high stats kid. UVa first choice. Selected for Echols. She’s thrilled.

Yay for your daughter - great achievement and terrific school!

Same. Liked the smaller size

No, no. Didn’t you get the memo? The only possible explanation for picking WM over UVA is that your kid must be “quirky.” 😀

That is so on point with dcum!

As a VT grad, I was sort of flabbergasted by the number of guys in full on khakis, vests, polos for just partying at the clubs on a random college night to the bars when we recently visited. I mean my kids wear that to their private school for dress code, but not typically what they hang out in when not in school or a night out with friends. Do all the schools dress like this or is this still a UVA thing? My son is an athlete, but gets turned off by an overly 'bro' culture so not sure the fit is there.

+1
The bro culture was a turnoff to both my son and my daughter.

Hmmm - feel like we experienced an entirely different school during a recent visit. Didn’t notice any difference in how UVA kids dressed vs other schools

Because there isn't any. These particular posters are either making it up, confirming a bias or seeing ghosts. Any which way it's an odd way to act. I guess they imagine college students should loaf around like slovenly degenerates. Like all colleges, UVA has plenty of that.

Sorry read that as the merit was from “equivalent or higher ranked” schools. I didn’t read the “or” as a break between merit and higher ranked.

I agree with PP and am not sure what school some posters are talking about. My DC is deciding between UVA, VT & Holy Cross. We attended admitted student events at UVA & VT last weekend and the kids dressed and acted the same. We talked to students who weren't working for the admissions office at both schools and were pleased to note how friendly they were at both schools, taking time to offer directions, share their experience and offer advice. The food at VT is definitely better than UVA's, but both campuses are beautiful and offer fantastic opportunities. As is often noted on this board, VA residents are lucky to have so many great options.

100% I wish VA residents would stop attacking other VA schools. My family has had family members at just about every public university in VA and they all had fantastic experiences and came out with excellent post-grad jobs or grad/law school acceptances.

As a donut hole family, many turned down top 10 and top 20 schools for the cost benefit of VA in-state tuition. Even as a Hokie, I am willing to send my kids to UVA and when I was visiting on admitted student day can say that it was beautiful and everyone was friendly and I would send my kids to any of them. Kid might choose WM and that's the one school we haven't had a family member attend yet.

When we visited UVA, we didn't see anyone dressed up (in fact, we saw a guy walking around in his bath robe). However, maybe the poster was there when there was a special event (i.e. Greek formal) or something like that going on.

There is no “bro culture” unless you spent time on Rugby Rd on a Saturday. I was just there in Sunday visiting my kid and saw every type of student imaginable.

My DS had his fraternity formal last weekend and I kept wondering what people from admitted student days probably thought if they saw them taking pics at the rotunda. Meanwhile this fraternity does not have a single “frat bro” type, so I assume people might not have even guessed they were Greek.

We picked William & Mary as well. It was neck and neck until the day before commitment day. In the end, our son felt more comfortable going to a smaller school (as he already goes to a tiny private school) - though he was very tempted to choose UVA (particularly, after his best friend chose UVA). Personally, we were pushing for UVA, but we obviously let him make the final decision. I think one kid from his school that year did come off the waitlist, but I feel like it happened much later (after commitment day or very close to it).
