I agree with PP and am not sure what school some posters are talking about. My DC is deciding between UVA, VT & Holy Cross. We attended admitted student events at UVA & VT last weekend and the kids dressed and acted the same. We talked to students who weren't working for the admissions office at both schools and were pleased to note how friendly they were at both schools, taking time to offer directions, share their experience and offer advice. The food at VT is definitely better than UVA's, but both campuses are beautiful and offer fantastic opportunities. As is often noted on this board, VA residents are lucky to have so many great options.
100% I wish VA residents would stop attacking other VA schools. My family has had family members at just about every public university in VA and they all had fantastic experiences and came out with excellent post-grad jobs or grad/law school acceptances. As a donut hole family, many turned down top 10 and top 20 schools for the cost benefit of VA in-state tuition. Even as a Hokie, I am willing to send my kids to UVA:) and when I was visiting on admitted student day can say that it was beautiful and everyone was friendly and I would send my kids to any of them. Kid might choose WM and that's the one school we haven't had a family member attend yet.
