UVA just offered spots to 57 people on its wait-list.

I sort of feel like they would prioritize in-state first, but no clue.

Last year when they took a few off WL I believe it was OOS for A&S. I know it was discussed on the admissions blog.

A senior I know well at my high school got into UVA off the waitlist before decision day last year. It might have been in the first wave.

Confirmed. OOS, A&S announced 5/2/23

Why is this surprising? 57 kids is not a lot, and they were accepted to other schools they prefer more. UVA has plenty of people on their wait list, so better to send out some acceptances now rather than compete in May with other schools. First mover best mover in this case.

I think UVA is careful to almost under-accept early on so they don't have an over abundance of kids accepting their offers and end up with a VT situation from a couple of years ago where there became serious housing issues b/c so many accepted their VT offers.

Wonder is anyone considering the UVA-Wise option was taken off the waitlist.

Just an observation: UNC doesn’t defer and they sometimes go to their waitlist early.

UVA didn’t defer this year, so I don’t think this is unexpected.

Nice of them to go straight to the OOS candidates when so many deserving in state kids would love to have a shot!!

Probably more in state kids are accepting the original admissions offer. It’s not taking seats away from in state kids, just maintaining the planned balance.

And my kid picked UVA over Tech and W&M. Strange how this works, they pick schools that appeal to them. The passive aggressive BS on this is juvenile.

They essentially have 10 waitlists. That is how Dean J explained it. They have 5 schools and a WL for both in state and a separate for OOS. I don’t know where they selected from, but if they anticipate having fewer OOS engineering students they will select from that WL.

Also, the OOS tuition $ helps.

They aim for 1/3 OOS

True. We are not wealthy but we had enough in the 529 for in state. So, FAFSA doesn’t matter to us.

As do VT and W&M. All 3 have a decades old agreement with the Commonwealth which limits OOS to *roughly* 1/3rd of freshman class admissions.
