Quick. Without looking it up. What is the name of the woman who set herself on fire at the Israeli Embassy in Atlanta?

My heart goes out to this young man’s parents and loved ones.

NP. I’m pretty sure that woman’s name hasn’t released. Aaron Bushnell appears to have been more media-savy and it has helped his cause.

In what way has it helped his cause?

A few more orders of magnitude of people have heard of it and engaged. Those engaging include, in case you haven’t noticed, yourself.

I’m sure he realized that those with their minds made up already (you?) would be unmoved. But given that many are undecided, motivating many people will impact things.

I was already engaged, buddy. And not in the Free Palestine direction.

You find me one person - just one - whose mind was changed by this man setting himself on fire.

The monk who set himself on fire during the Vietnam War wasn't protesting the war itself. He was protesting the persecution of Buddhists - like himself - by the Vietnamese government. He had a personal stake that went beyond wanting approval on Twitter and Reddit.

It would make more sense if a Palestinian set themselves on fire, perhaps? But an American doing it just seems like he got himself all radicalized, got cheered on by his online "friends," and forgot that the internet isn't real life. It's very sad - and makes your side look terrible. It's not anything more than that.

If you actually think the extent of activists' commitment to seeing justice for the people living in Gaza and other parts of Palestine ends at Twitter and Reddit, you're deluding yourself. And your argument is contradicted by the fact that someone set himself on fire based on the strengths of his beliefs.

I don't think that's all. I think you people are going to start killing other people as well as killing yourselves. I just don't think you are *convincing* anyone with this behavior.

I don’t think people want to copy Israel/the IDF .

It's ok for Israel to kill Palestinians, though. Very convincing.

In other words, you’re saying he’s not radical for setting himself on fire per day . He’s radicalized for setting himself on fire for Palestinians .

If you think he did that for Palestinians, that’s half the problem. He did that for Americans to protest our government funding wars and to bring attention here. I’d imagine if that were Vietnam, Cuba, Mexico, Russia he would do the same . It has nothing to do with Palestinians

? He literally did it "for Palestine", screaming Free Palestine as he died, over and over again, after writing the most basic pro Hamas propaganda online and being radicalized on pro-Hamas anarchist forums. And pro-Hamas people online are praising what he did FOR PALESTINE. He's all yours.

Well then I'd say this stunt made even less sense, honestly. By the time you have to give a complicated explanation about why a man set himself on fire in front of Israel's embassy, you're done.

What other actions are they taking? Harassing Jews in the US, blocking roads, blocking Grand Central...How is any of this achieving anything good?

It’s thrown a lot of you ghoulish bigots off balance. That’s a great thing! The hasbara sounds even more tired than usual. And if you are just a garden variety older American who has been highly trained (unknowingly) by decades of hasbara, you might just be making your side sound a lot more foolish and short for this world than you realize.

I am sure anything resembling “stop the war in Gaza” is a pro Hamas post for you. Hamas doesn’t even radicalize Palestinians to burn themselves and are very against suicide and prevent even the hostages from suicide so why would they radicalize this guy to suicide ? Get a grip.

Palestine is not the cause. He is ideologically confused by the various hats he wore that made up his identity -an airman, an anarchist, and a pacifist, And he decided to go out with a bang and protest this government by making a statement against the current war .

This could’ve been Feb 2004 and he , in the same state of mind, would’ve burned himself in front of the White House against the Iraq war. People like him are already triggered

^ And he's not even trending on Twitter anymore. Probably every year on the anniversary of his self-immolation his photo and video will be reshared.

I don’t have a cause but your idea that he got led by the hand by Hamas to do this via online radicalization is such bull and I called it out. Why would Hamas who is anti suicide push this guy to do it? He already had his own issues on his own and in a different time and era, he would have likely done the same to protest another Us war. He’s an anarchist for Christ’s sake. They love fire and they hate the government. Put 2 and 2 together.

Hamas is definitely pro suicide, they have encouraged suicide bombings, they see it as martyrdom. And the pro-Hamas crowd is vocally praising him, including people like Jill Stein and Cornell West (go take a look at the many comments of praise on their posts). You do not get to pretend this isn't happening because you are getting push back and finally are realizing maybe you don't want him as your poster child.
