What are the best independent schools ranked 1 - 8 ?

Half of you on here are trolls. Based on the comments, you spit out opinions disguised as actual knowledge. I am willing to bet that the people on here who are creating the list have never had a child in any of these schools.

Yeah. It's been two or three years away for more than a decade. Good luck!!!

Your post is proof that people will post any ill-informed lie on DCUM.

Sidwell purchased the Upton Street campus in December 2016. We just entered 2024, so Sidwell has owned the Upton property for 7 years and 2 months! At least 2 of those 7 years were during COVID.

So, you expected Sidwell to raise $152M; navigate all of DC’s bureaucratic red tape; deal with local neighborhoods/ANCs that will inevitably oppose something about the construction; and complete a multimillion multi-building construction project within 7 years (including a 2 year global pandemic)? That’s your criticism? Mmmkay.

Sidwell signed the deal to but the nursing home in September 2015. It took 15 months to kick out the old people before transferring the deed.

So under the current promise that will be 11 years for phase one,.

I'm betting on further delays. The traffic on Wisconsin has gotten far worse over the past decade with so much more development. No way the neighbors won't try to stop an expansion.

But bigger problem is commercial construction costs in DC are skyrocketing. They could easily have to add 20% or more for cost increases and overruns. The school is probably more like 40 or 50 million short than 10. And every year of additional delay will add another 10 or 15 million of construction
costs to the price tag (In addition to the costs caused by owning a mostly vacant former nursing home for almost a decade). Kind of a mess, right?

You are really streaaaaaaaaching to make some nonsensical point.

You/Sidwell/God can “sign” whatever deal you want. The property isn’t yours to do anything with until you actually purchase it. In Sidwell’s case, that was the end of December 2016. It’s been 7 years, so please move on and mind business that actually affects you. You have no relationship with Sidwell…other than that of an unsuccessful applicant.

So, if Sidwell actually can occupy the renovated nursing home as its US by fall 2026, that will be nearly 10 years after closing on the property and 11 years after signing an agreement. And of course, that still isn't a consolidated campus because the US then needs to be renovated, especially given how rundown it is now.

10 or 11 years is insanely long, don't you agree?

Total incompetence and waste of donor money-- and tuition money.

How much debt does the school have and how much tuition is going to debt repayment? Is the debt still bigger than the endowment?

Why do you care?!? Your children don’t attend Sidwell. You didn’t donate a single dollar to this $152M campaign. It’s the donors’ money to “waste,” not yours. You, your children, and your grandchildren haven’t had/don’t have/won’t have anything to do with Sidwell.

Sidwell’s large, unified and beautifully renovated campus will open in a couple of years, and YOU.WILL.DEAL! You will still be angry and bitter, but you will deal.

First I see the debt is in fact larger than the endowment. Second, it is apparent members of the community have mental health challenges. Third, other schools would need to file tax reports showing the debt but Sidwell hides behind the excuse of being a religious institution.

Sidwell should not be considered a top 3 school.

Too bad for you that Sidwell will forever and always be considered “a top 3 school.” Let’s be honest, most people in the DMV consider Sidwell to be #1–even if they don’t want to admit it.

Although you don’t deserve it, I’m feeling charitable today. Thus, I will spare a few moments to teach you some Sidwell facts, related to this fundraising campaign. Per the campaign letter and brochure that Sidwell mailed to parents: “This comprehensive campaign will fund the renovation of the Upton Street building to serve as the future site of the Upper School and other all-School spaces, double our endowment to broaden access to a Sidwell Friends education, and support programs to deepen our students ethical engagement with the world.”

In case you missed the bolded sentence above, a portion of the money raised from this $152M campaign will DOUBLE Sidwell’s endowment. Hopefully, that information puts your fears about Sidwell’s endowment to rest. 😊

I would actually remove BIM from the list because it isn’t as well rounded. Add Stone Ridge, Georgetown Visitation, SSSAS, Georgetown Prep, Saint Andrew’s, and Flint Hill. There you have 15 schools that provide a solid education and the normal American school experience.

Sidwell hides the debt from public view in tax filings. Occasionally it provides members of the Sidwell community updates when demanded. From one such email.

Sidwell Friends’s endowment should be understood in light of the financial complexities of an independent day school. On April 24, 2020, the value of the School’s endowment ($53.4M) had dropped by nearly 10%. Current debt ($64.4M) exceeds the value of the endowment.

How do you know that Sidwell's debt is greater than its endowment???

They don’t know because it isn’t true. Reread what this person wrote: “First I see the debt is in fact larger than the endowment… Third, other schools would need to file tax reports showing the debt but Sidwell hides behind the excuse of being a religious institution.”

Which is it? You can see Sidwell’s “debt is in fact larger than the endowment,” yet Sidwell hides its debt and doesn’t need to publicly file taxes because it “hides behind the excuse of being a religious institution.”
You can’t argue both sides of this lie.

Whhhhaaaatttt???

I would actually remove BIM from the list because it isn’t as well rounded. Add Stone Ridge, Georgetown Visitation, SSSAS, Georgetown Prep, Saint Andrew’s, and Flint Hill. There you have 15 schools that provide a solid education and the normal American school experience.

OMG. Cringing - for the BIM booster..
