Do Your Teenage Boys Still Wear Pajamas?

Absolutely agree

I don't think many teen boys wear pajamas. Younger teen boys probably sleep in underwear and older teen boys sleep in the nude.

Do you think if your DH is a nude sleeper there is a big chance that your son will become one as well?

Neither my husband nor my teenage son sleeps in the nude (both wear boxers only). Come to think of it, I don’t think any guy I ever dated slept in the nude unless he fell asleep after sex. I doubt nude sleeping is so prevalent it would be the “norm”. Maybe 50/50.

I remember my father telling me that he and the boys and men in his life when he was growing up regularly slept in only underwear by a certain age, and even nude in the summertime, and that was the 1950s. He said he learned it from my grandfather, and that would have been the 1920s.

Given your surprise, what does your husband wear to bed? Full pajamas? Nothing wrong with that, just not the norm.

My husband slept naked, which I know isn't uncommon for men. I was just surprised when I found out that kids sleep like that, but maybe you're right and I've been influenced by tv and marketing.

Unfortunately my husband passed away when my son was young, so I know he had no influence on my son's sleepwear. I guess it's just a man thing.

PP, if I might ask, what do you wear to bed, and if it’s less than fully clothed, could that be an influence on him in the absence of his father? Or maybe it really is something he picked up entirely from his friends.

Sleeping in underwear or nothing can also be a woman thing. I sleep naked, and so does my DD17, my sister, and several of my female friends over the years. You might want to give it a try yourself!

I sleep in underwear and a t- shirt. My son started sleeping in his underwear after returning from camp, so I'm sure that's where he picked it up.

I don't recall any of my female friends sleeping naked. On the other hand, pretty much every guy I've seen sleeps shirtless or in the nude. In fact, I didn't even know guys slept in anything more than underwear until one of the guys I slept with in college came to bed wearing a shirt. I guess sleeping naked is something I've never seen as a woman thing and something I never thought about. When did you start sleeping naked?

I would sleep naked randomly in high school if it was hot or if I fell asleep without pulling some clothes back on after masturbating. I started regularly in college when I had a roommate who stripped down the first night and I just did the same thing so not to appear shocked or uncool.

The handful of times I’ve had to wake my daughter up since about the time she turned 16, she’s thrown the covers back and gotten out of bed completely nude while making casual conversation with me as though she were clothed. She always saw me do the same, so I’m not surprised she picked it up and isn’t embarrassed or self conscious about it when I’m in the room. It’s just a great and natural feeling.

I’m the PP who wrote this. I’m so very sorry to hear that your husband passed away. Please pardon me for making assumptions. How old is your son now? Still 8 or was that a while ago? It wouldn’t be surprising if he ends up taking after your husband regardless and simply sleeping naked by the time he’s a teen. It is very much a man thing, and a healthy one at that.

My husband died of a sudden heart attack shortly after my son turned 5. When I put my son to bed last night I asked him if he remembered how his daddy slept, and he said he didn't. My son then asked me how his daddy slept, and I said he didn't wear pajamas, either. And my son said , "See, boys don't wear pajamas" It was actually kind of funny.

Yes, I'm sure you are probably right that he'll eventually start sleeping naked. Nothing I can do about it, but why do you think it is more healthy than wearing pajamas? When did your kids stop wearing pajamas?

There are a lot of health benefits. Google “sleeping naked benefits” or something like that and you’ll see.

I think that is very plausible. My DH is a nude sleeper and our sons (13 and 15) have become nude sleepers as well.

+1. Many kids probably have the urge to be nude in bed once they’ve reached puberty and knowing that one or both parents sleep the same way confirms to them that it’s an acceptable thing.

I read some of those articles, but I don't see any of those theories being backed by research. If you want to sleep naked because you like the way it feels, then fine, but you don't need to justify it by unproven theories. A lot of people sleep in clothes and they do just fine.

+1. That is also my experience.

Agreed. These kinds of articles and reports all say the same thing and seem to want to “sell” sleeping nude. I do it and wouldn’t sleep any other way, but I couldn’t care less about what everybody else prefers.

Or do did you find out what they do or don’t wear based on casual conversation? In particular, sleeping nude seems like a very personal, private choice. Not wrong or bad, just personal. I wouldn’t be surprised if my teens do too, but I’m not about to ask or check for myself.

I don't see why it should be such a big taboo?

Enough mornings going in to wake DS up after he sleeps through the alarm is how I know. A topless upper body with a pair of removed underwear on the floor all the time kind of makes it obvious. No words or embarrassing moments necessary.

Same here with my DS (15). He has gotten better at getting up on his own in the last year or so though.

+1. But I also think that a lot of boys start sleeping in the nude from the onset of puberty - at least that was the case with my
DS (14).

I have never seen that but the same goes for my son.
