They leave out a main factor. Trump has made the rank and file conservatives (who were formerly pro military) anti war and anti woke. Liberals who are pro war now do not join the military and never have. Here we are with proxy WW3 in Europe and China on the move with our military shrinking.

Proof that Trump even screwed up the only thing flyover state trash was good for - joining the army. That was literally the only worthwhile contribution red states ever made for this nation, and now that’s ruined too.

Is there anything that buffoon didn’t ruin? I can’t think of a single thing.

The only answers I see are—
1) significantly raise pay
2) offer citizenship in a change for X years of service
3) increase free student loans/tuition programs
4) institute national mandatory service which could be military, teaching, police, medical, or civilian conservation corp. pick one and give the country at least 2 years of it.

4 all the way!

We need a national service requirement for young people between 18-21. Let them choose military or civilian service. Offer some program to tackle climate change preparedness issues and the like. Defer for college if you want but then immediately serve after undergrad. That would give me hope for the future.

Forced labor? We aren't a communist state. Wouldn't this violate the 13th Amendment?

There are plenty of ways to do good for the country without coercion. Pass.

This article says a lot for what is a simple answer based on the only piece of data in the article.

If in 2013 29% were eligible to join and now only 23% are eligible, we have a just over 20% reduction in eligibility. What is the current shortfall? About 20%!!! This is basic math, forget the rest of the article which is just anecdotal. We are Not meeting recruiting standards because of the reduction of eligible candidates. Fix that, difficult, and your problem is solved.

Low unemployment rates and politicians wasting young American lives in Iraq and Afghanistan are also a big reason for the shortfall. But yes, there aren't too many young people who are even capable of serving. That is the bigger crisis. When only 23 percent of 18 year olds are even eligible to enlist, that's a bad place for a country. And a sad commentary about the state of our youth.

Maybe community service, military or civilian, could be a factor in college admissions. And I don't mean taking a year off to tour South America, working for a week at an orphanage, and calling that community service. It has to be something that truly benefits the community as a whole.

Since republicans hate higher education why would they care whether their “community service” factors into their admission?

Is this kinda like the Bud Light boycott? The traditional young men cannon fodder from the hinterlands don't much cotton to all this "woke" stuff so they'll boycott the military? It's possible, but we haven't faced a real crisis yet - so we don't know how this generation of eligible soldiers will react if that happens.

5) Stop making them feel unwelcome and unsupported in the first place. In other words, stop causing the problems we have in the first place, democrats.

You know... like accusing our soldiers of burning Korans in GITMO, working tirelessly to defund the police, blinding the police with lasers and trying to lock them in a police station and burn it down during the summer of 2020 peaceful riots. Or demanding the military get vax'd or be dishonorably discharged or call nurses heroes when it works for you during covid only to villainize them later on. You really are just full of yourselves and judgemental on the sidelines while believing you can throw more money at people to buy off your evil behavior.

Republicans don't hate higher education. They hate free loading democrats who hand out degrees like candy, lower edicational standards and push grievance studies and recreational degrees as a payoff to tge AFT, NEA and labor unions.

Meanwhile these cornfed conservative youths are in too bad a shape to join the military and can't pass the tests. And somehow conservatives seem to be proud of that now.

Wow this rich coming from the people who genuflects to the man who said anyone who joins the military is a sucker. You are acting like republicans are honorable and respect those who serve. Man you are a loser.

They adore the proud draft-dodger and insult the man with two boys who served - one of whom died due to his service. They’re either a bunch of trolls or awful, ignorant people.

Liberals never join and now conservatives are done with it.

The elite war planners need to lead the way with their children volunteering in combat units. That would be patriotic.
