Do you care if your DC has perspective about their privilege?

Not after reading this thread. Any guilt is gone and replaced by how many miles we can put between whatever this is and our DCs

If you believe it, then your kids might too.

This is really why it matters that people understand their advantages. Because you start thinking that money = value, and that people with less money have less value. That because you (or your parents) worked hard, you "deserve" what you have, and then you start thinking that people who don't have what you do don't "deserve" it. I don't want a kid who thinks they are better than others because they are rich, or because their parents are rich, who looks down on people who have less, who assumes that poor people are worthless, who feels entitled to stuff and can't handle it or lashes out if they don't get what they think they deserve or are entitled to. If you treat money as just one thing that people can have, and one which does not carry positive moral value, and cultivate empathy for others, you're in good shape.

Unfortunately, 99% of the people in private schools believe money = value. The pay-to-play system in effect at schools like STA, Sidwell, and GDS reinforces that constantly. Those who donate the most money are treated as more valuable human beings.

I grew up without much money, and most of my siblings still live paycheck to paycheck. I have done much better in the career choice and money management but I don't now and have never seen someone with less money (including my extended family) being of less value than myself. That is an absurd statement to make, but one that people who are pushing a narrative will make. Sad.

Don't care at all. We are rich. The kids have no guilt.

"people who are pushing a narrative". You mean the deep-seated American cultural emphasis on wealth = worth? This is rooted in the Puritan view that if God loves you and you are one of the Elect, you will of course be blessed with wealth. If you are poor, that's bc you're a sinner that God has decided to curse.
