Yes, for the right kids.

No they are not. Public schools get a boost from grad school. They are large and accept a ton of students, in turn deans at a lot of unis give them high ratings.

Berkeley is ranked 36 on times/wsj. This thread happens to just be about us news.

Cal has an amazing reputation on the West Coast and in East Asia. For some reason, it gets lumped in with Michigan or Michigan and UVA a lot here (probably because they are great public schools). In California, the discussion starts with Stanford and Cal.

Even for CS and most eng fields, it would be all 3 (Stanford, Cal, and CalTech...my years at Stanford probably affect the ordering there). In general though, it would be the 2. CalTech and UCLA are great too and undervalued here. The same could be said about Pomona and CMC in terms of SLACs.
