Didn’t stop the KKK/white supremacists/Daughters of confederate POSs from putting them up. |
Shhh! Don't tell anyone that white supremacists put up all those statues. They're only meant to symbolize "heritage" and "history". |
Germans don't whine about keeping statues of Nazis around. |
|
Weird that people want to talk about "deep history" where it comes to the Confederacy. The Confederacy only existed from Feb 1861 to May 1865, a little over 4 years.
That's a brief period of time. Think about it - Hell, the Simpsons TV show has been a part of US history for longer than the Confederacy was. |
| Instead of removing shameful statues, put large signs explaining their shameful behavior and its consequences. |
| We need to learn from the history, hiding it wont help. |
Agreed. We need to tear down the racist propaganda statues and in their place erect proper memorials to educate the public about the atrocities of slavery and racial hatred. |
We’re not hiding it, we just saying it shouldn’t be celebrated. Put it in a museum, not on a signpost. |
|
Germany doesn't have statues of Nazis, they don't have streets, schools or military bases named after Nazis, yet they still learn about the horrible history of the Nazis.
That kind of history belongs in textbooks, as opposed to being rewarded and celebrated by raising statues et cetera. |
| It's jaw dropping that these idiotic neo-Confederates today seem to think they know better than Robert E. Lee himself. |
Can't tell if this is an idiot or a genius response. |
What's "idiot" about it? Germans don't have statues celebrating Nazis like we do here with our statues celebrating Confederate butchers. But you also don't hear a big outcry from Germans whining about "why did they take down the statues of Nazis, why did the rename buildings named after Nazis" the way we do here with the whining neo-Confederates when they complain about their mass-produced Jim Crow era confederate statues being taken down. It's not "genius" either, it's what should just be mastery of the obvious. |
Then why aren't you? "I moved to Virginia so I could retain some of what I left behind." |
Because "we" didn't recover from it. Some people did, many others did not. That is why there is such unrest now. |
I agree this is another way to handle it. |
