Just look at her LinkedIn - the private school she attended in Pakistan has educated multiple prime ministers and presidents of the country; she then went to several post-HS private schools, including a $65k boarding school in the US. As an academic who's worked with a lot of international students, I guarantee you that she comes from a very privileged background.

Lol. You are an uninformed fool. You think a highly privileged international student will be given a $70+k a year scholarship to attend Duke? Grow up. And I am not defending what she did. I have no dog in that fight. I'm only saying that there is a very very very high probability that she is not even in the vicinity of being privileged

Who cares? None of this gives her a pass on plagiarism. She cheated. She got caught. She had a fancy PR firm try to defend her and she should be ashamed.

DP. You people cheat all the time beginning with sending your kids to private schools because it has the connections to get your dumb kid into an ivy or eq. You are just jealous that your kid didn't make it as far this girl did.

Also, she did not cheat on her exams (don't assume unless you can prove it). It's just a stupid speech no one will remember except for pedantic fools like you.

NP: For her sake, I hope she didn't cheat on exams/papers because they are coming for her. I'm sure Duke/professors are checking her work as we post. The Duke Chronicle announced that it is reviewing all of her editorial contributions. Also, I think the speech will cause problems for her, at least in the near future, e.g., job offers, grad school, etc.

Yes, because this lays the foundation for attracting more students from her school who will be full-pay+

Not a secret in college admissions

Yep, target the wealthy schools with one golden ticket. All the better if it goes to a wealthy undeserving student, this is what resonates with the other families.

Yes, this may just be " a stupid speech no one will remember" for many- but how about the Duke students who wrote original speeches and tried out for commencement speaker? or the original author who has been nothing but gracious about this? I hope this young lady experiences consequences that will reset her values and make her learn that cheating is not right... although one would think she ought to have learned that early on....

I don't care if she came from the slums or a castle. SHE CHEATED.

Her background is 1000% irrelevant.

The blasphemy laws are insane in Pakistan. You say something even a little uppity and you can get lynched to death like this one

So you have to be really really really nice. Speak extra sweet, never act uppity, never say that you are being ill treated, lest you piss off some crazy dude.

The constant stress of growing up in such a country, scars you forever. She is definitely "NOT ENTITLED". The only reason she got to attend Duke is because she got a full ride, because her family is too poor to send her to school in the US but she must have been really good academically in Pakistan.

I don't know why she did what she did, but she is not some privileged Asian striver

As someone from that part of the world, let me set a few things straight. There are definitely cases of young Hindu girls being abducted and forced to convert in Sindh. However, that happens in a very rural part of the province where there are no schools or electricity or any other modern convenience to begin with. And those families are dirt poor without any connections or other resources.

This girl is from Karachi which is the largest city in Pakistan. She would not be in any danger of being abducted for marriage. While she did go to a "prep" school, please remember that the conversion rate from rupees to USD makes it impossible for even the upper middle class in Pakistan to send their kids to college without need based aid. If you were to convert the cost of her private school in Karachi to USD, it would probably be no more than $200 a month. Her parents were not paying fees comparable to private schools in D.C. that run anywhere from $20,000 - $50,000 a year.

I don't excuse her plagiarism please don't conjecture on her past either as coming from abject poverty and escaping life as a child bride or as a rich scammer who pretended not to be well off. She comes from a regular middle to upper middle class South Asian family whose parents are most likely professionals themselves. They would be doing well enough to live a comfortable life in Pakistan but their income cannot and DOES NOT translate to sufficient resources to come anywhere close to paying full-freight at a U.S. private college. The story is similar to most kids from India who come to the U.S. to study.

And the reason I know this is that I was a similar Pakistani student who received a large scholarship to attend a college in Boston. My parents are both professionals and I never claimed to be a first generation student. I was upfront about their education and their resources. They earn in rupees and the most that they could pay after converting their income to dollars was $10,000 a year. I am forever grateful to my college for giving me a substantial mix of merit and need based loans (supplemented with work study) that allowed me to graduate a few years ago. I like to think I brought a certain diversity and international experience to their Northeastern student body which they valued.

On 7th May 2022, 14 year old Chandni, a Hindu guru was kidnapped from the main road in Block 16, Gulshan e Iqbal Karachi. Pakistan is a failed state. Maybe you don't worry about these things because you belong to the majority community, but every time ac Christian or Hindu girl goes outside her home in this lawless failed state, they can be kidnapped, or accused of blasphemy and lynched. So don't try to swat away what these people live with on a daily basis.

Yeah, yeah and Detroit is the most dangerous city in the US, so that means every rich biz exec/doctor/lawyer kid who grew up in Detroit’s Palmer Woods neighborhood and attended private UD Jesuit High School can apply for scholarships, fellowships and awards with a fake narrative on how they dodged gang warfare, narcotic dealing, human trafficking and parents addicted to crack growing up in the mean streets of inner city Detroit? And when they’re caught cheating and being a crook they get to claim they’re just poor victims from Detroit.

Because her family is high caste elite, obviously.
