It's pretty much like growing up Jewish under in early Nazi Germany Young Hindu girls are abducted frequently in Pakistan and forced into marriage after conversion with no way to escape because once they convert, leaving Islam carries the death penalty in Pakistan. If you resist you could get killed. Like this case.... Btw, this Duke girl is from the same province, Sindh...

The blasphemy laws are insane in Pakistan. You say something even a little uppity and you can get lynched to death like this one

https://www.geo.tv/latest/387095-sialkot-lynching-horrific-and-inhumane

So you have to be really really really nice. Speak extra sweet, never act uppity, never say that you are being ill treated, lest you piss off some crazy dude.

The constant stress of growing up in such a country, scars you forever. She is definitely "NOT ENTITLED". The only reason she got to attend Duke is because she got a full ride, because her family is too poor to send her to school in the US but she must have been really good academically in Pakistan.

I don't know why she did what she did, but she is not some privileged Asian striver

Uh did you miss the fact she went to a Tony private school?

Ok. Let me explain something to you, since your are probably unaware of it. Most of the Hindus left over in Pakistan are Dalit, i e. Untouchables. Do you know what work they do? They are sewer cleaners. They physically enter sick disgusting smelling putrid hellholes and clean them without masks, gloves or any protective gear. It's the worst job anybody can do and it pays shit. That's all infidels can aspire to in the failed state of Pakistan, unless they convert. Whatever school this girl attended was on a scholarship or grant by some other generous foundation or because somebody in the family agreed you convert to Christianity to get into a Christian private school. Her parents probably make less than $50 a month if they are lucky. How can I be sure? because of the way her last name is spelled.

That’s how Dalits are treated in India - not just Pakistan.

Curious what does the spelling of her last name tell you?

Harvard and Duke wanted diverse show ponies and these ladies obliged in the most stereotypical, cringe way possible. Both speeches were too cutesy by far. That's worse than the lack of originality.

And the delighted schadenfreude oozing from some of these posts is revolting. Grow up. This girl did something stupid and wrong and she will spend the rest of her life paying for it which is more than we can say for most of the old men running this broken world of ours.

The whole situation and everyone involved in it make me sick.

Wow! How old was she? Most college graduates are in their early 20s, but you're telling me she was still under 18? That's actually very impressive!

NOPE. She was on scholarship.

PP who is obsessed with defending the Duke commencement speaker - despite your certainty about her upbringing based on her name alone, there's zero way this woman was raised in extreme poverty. Just look at her LinkedIn - the private school she attended in Pakistan has educated multiple prime ministers and presidents of the country; she then went to several post-HS private schools, including a $65k boarding school in the US. As an academic who's worked with a lot of international students, I guarantee you that she comes from a very privileged background.

Lol. You are an uninformed fool. You think a highly privileged international student will be given a $70+k a year scholarship to attend Duke? Grow up. And I am not defending what she did. I have no dog in that fight. I'm only saying that there is a very very very high probability that she is not even in the vicinity of being privileged

Who cares? None of this gives her a pass on plagiarism. She cheated. She got caught. She had a fancy PR firm try to defend her and she should be ashamed.

Whoever is whipping up the 10,000 word defense can’t find photos of this woman’s parents cleaning sewers, of course. The rest of this woman’s life is online, show us proof of the shack she grew up in and her sewer cleaner parents. You don’t have proof, just more lies and deflections. She is clearly an elite, you can tell by how she talks and how she’s curated her resume and plays all the angles.

Are her “sewer cleaner” parents going to be thrown in debtors prison when they can’t pay the PR bill. lol Imagine not immediately seeing this woman for the con artist she is.

DP. You people cheat all the time beginning with sending your kids to private schools because it has the connections to get your dumb kid into an ivy or eq. You are just jealous that your kid didn't make it as far this girl did.

Also, she did not cheat on her exams (don't assume unless you can prove it). It's just a stupid speech no one will remember except for pedantic fools like you.

I've seen plenty of Indian movies that are word-for-word copies of American movies.

So she was presumably cheating her way through a Duke bachelor's, too?

No way. All colleges bend over to indoctrinate on no plagiarism rules right from the start. Look at UVA’s honor code for example.

Which is going the way of the dinosaur, sadly. Cheating is a thing now.

Yes, because this lays the foundation for attracting more students from her school who will be full-pay+

Not a secret in college admissions
