What were your DC’s top schools they were deciding between and where are they committing?

Was it money?!

Probably also research opportunities. I heard W&M is a really good place for undergrads to do lab science research.

That was definetly part of her decision. She was able to speak to a Professor and some Biology students and felt W&M would provide her very early access to participate in research and that Profs do not shy away to credit student as co-publishers. Due to it's size less competion with grads to get research spots, and a closer connection. With the faculty, while still larger than a LAC so a broader range in topics.

Since she plans to go all the way to Ph.D. and hopefully one day do her own research it semed the most sensible choice financially too. Ignoring she fell in love with W&M after her first visit already.

CMU & Emory were tempting, but in the end too expensive for something she was not 100% convinced of. UVA was her cheapest option of those. Ignoring money she ranked them W&M, CMU, Emory, UVA.

I was pulling for Lehigh, spouse pulling for UVA. We agreed we would cover undergrad, so kid would not have any debt.

Kid is super practical, want to keep college fund ($200k) fully in-tact for grad school. Committed to Tulane yesterday.

That is fantastic, and good for your kid for being so practical. Do you mind giving some indication of your kid's stats and what got them the full ride? I hadn't even heard that Tulane gives full rides. It's on DD's list.

Sure.

35 ACT, NMF, AP scholar w distinction, 1 of 2 kids who took max AP classes possible @ high school, state finalist for hs student of the year, diverse ECs w proven school and community leadership, co-authored published research.

Quirky kid who is bright, well-rounded, well-liked by peers and teachers. Great rec letters, super strong writer so +++ essays.

Accepted EA then applied for honor scholarship and TRIA (research) after accepted.

Super proud of the pragmatic decision AND 100% sure the kid will be intellectually and socially happy at Tulane (not a partier… so far…) with great opportunities for grad school.

Northwestern, Vassar, Muhlenberg...I think we will go down to the wire before dd makes the decision.

Hello! I think we met at NU DC greet. Us too. Waiting on FA. I would think NU would beat out V & M. WHat are the factors I'm not seeing? Good luck to your kid. If you are who I think you are, mine enjoyed meeting yours!

My friend's oldest chose to enlist in the Army and committed for 6 years. He is now at Harvard in his second year and the military is paying 100%. Not too shabby...

Rice, UVA (the final choices)

Chose Rice

RICE is on our list. What is the campus vibe like? Not sure if we will have a chance to visit before applying.

Congrats to you and your kid! Our student is at Tulane on a full scholarship, similar reasons. Prelaw and saving it up for law school. Freshman and has had many opportunities to build leadership and work with professors this year. My observation is that if a kid is motivated Tulane goes the extra mile in supporting them.
