Do I really have to neuter our dog?!

Anonymous
Gosh OP I'm here right now with this poor female foster dog who was chained in a back yard.... you can guess what happened. She had three puppies last night but she's young. She doesn't seem to "get" nursing. I don't know what's going to happen to these poor puppies.

Please people, I've seen so many horribly neglected dogs. Please spay and neuter.

Plenty of dogs aren't.

I'm not in the DC area, but the rules at most dog parks in my city state no females in heat. There are no rules saying that the dogs need to be fixed. I take my intact male and he never tries to hump the other dogs.

Aren't you afraid of fights? There are lots of neutered males who do not like unneutered dogs.

Do you have to? No.

Is it the right thing to do? Yes.

As in with many things in life you don’t have to do anything. But for many of the reasons people have suggested here it’s the right thing to do and may ultimately make your life easier in the long run.

If you have a dog that doesn’t display any of the unwanted behaviors (humping/roaming etc) and has a great personality and is calm and you are not worried about getting f dogs pregnant because you are confident in keeping them away from escaping etc. Why then would you neuter? I am not trying to argue but to understand? The fear is that neutering a well behaved dog could change his personality. I feel like that is getting lost. We are talking about looking at a dog as an individual and not as a group.

Neutering a well behaved dog will not change it into an ill behaved dog. There is absolutely no reason to make that claim. You aren't worried about accidents because it won't be you dealing with them, be honest about that. Do what you want, but don't ask for everyone to applaud your decision.

Exactly. And be prepared to be judged about NOT neutering your dog if you do take it out in public, because it will be obvious, it will be noticed and it's depicted as low class. Can't say if that's justified or not but that's going to be the perception of you and your dog.

It’s just such a gross thing. Like spitting in public. I don’t go in for the DCUM worship of “high class” people or anything, but have some self respect and be a decent person.

Usually everything is fine and he has no problem with the regulars. Occasionally a neutered dog will pick on him, he doesn't like confrontation and he is pretty submissive so he usually either ignores or lays down. If he comes to me for help or if the dog continues to single him out, we just leave. There was one time when an idiot brought a female in heat to the dog park, my dog was pretty interested in her, but so were all the other dogs at the park both male and female regardless of whether they were fixed or not. Obviously I just called my dog over and we left.

What's gross is that you are constantly checking to see if dogs have their balls or not.

Is there data about aggressive acts (attacking, biting) in fixed vs non-fixed dogs?

Umm . . doesn't take much work/effort to see the balls hanging out the back!

It doesn't and a male dog can get cancer if not neutered.

I think this is why you should neuter your dog - out of compassion for all of the unwanted dogs.

Agreed. Shelters are chock full of unwanted dogs.

Anecdotally I knew a litter (my grandma's neughbor had the puppies and my aunt and uncle each got.one) where one male was neutered and one was not. The unfixed male was this drooly, humpy dog who died of cancer relatively young while his brother was a good companion dog who lived to 15 (old for a retriever).

I'm a cat owner and I'd never ever have an unfixed cat. Too many kittens already.

Your dog may one day run away (temporarily) and breed litters with other stray dogs. There are enough unwanted feral dogs that then breed again and again. They suffer miserable lives of hunger, disease and get hit by cars. Please neuter your dog!
