An interested 14 year old who is a total beginner should have a option available at their high school. They will most likely be shut out though since you seem to have to have played travel for years to make the Freshman or JV teams at most high schools.

They do. It’s called intramurals.
.

According to the CDC only 24% of 6 - 17 year olds get 60 minutes of physical exercise a day.

https://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/physicalactivity/facts.htm

The other 76% obviously are not getting suitable fitness opportunities at their schools which would include sports that’s accessible to them.

I know! I heard that everyone went private and now the schools are empty!

If you weren’t a fool you’d know the declines in FCPS’s enrollment are higher than both other area systems and many other systems of comparable size across the country.

Enjoy the race to the bottom in the name of “equity.”

And yet SAT scores are at an all-time high and TJ Is ranked the #1 HS in the US. I'm loving this view from the bottom!

^^ Most likely because the ones taking and submitting the SAT/ACT are the ones who already do well. taken the exam.

It’s too early to say. Only time will tell!

He can play with friends or recreationally.

Correct. SAT scores in FCPS declined for Class of 2021. And of course any TJ ranking is based on data for students prior to the admissions change.

+1. TJ scores won't be affected for at least two more years when the class of 2025 are juniors and taking the SATs.

Is affirmative actions a form of equity? Or is it adding an additional crate to rise above people who benefit from white privilege?

The pic OP posted is funny though, because notice none of them paid for a ticket to watch the game like everyone in the stands. True equity would be if they got free tickets.

Interesting observation that escaped me

Equity means providing the Title I kids more benefits than the kids from the higher SES schools because the Title I kids theoretically need greater support to have an equal footing as the kids from the SES schools.

So the high achiever receives nothing in order to give more to the lowest achiever? Seems like the direction FCPS is heading in.

This is pretty much the way it is in a Title 1 school. If you have a high achiever, they will get next to nothing after the winter break.

I'll play. Take the video and add, "Take 2 steps back if:"

- your parents never married
- your parents never finished high school
- you don't spend time with or know one parent
- your mother had you or a sibling while in high school or shortly thereafter

Again, no fault on these kids, but this is what I observed in my own family. I had the advantage of being the youngest and could see what happens when you have kids too early in life. They are still living in poverty or close to it and their kids are highly disadvantaged. Please don't blame me for taking a different road.

Not just at Title 1 schools. Middle/upper middle SES schools count on parents of kids performing ahead, even moderately so, to keep them there so teachers can focus on those behind. And now those same kids will be told they don't merit AAP because everything's just fine, your parents will make sure you learn

They expect tiger moms to either quit and be SAHM so that they can be a teacher to their kids during the weekends, OR them to work full time and still take out time to teach during the weekends and spend money on tutoring.
Homeschooling is better than equity focused FCPS.
