Say what?

I wear all kinds of shirts in favor of BLM, LGBTQ rights etc. Luckily I teach in DC at a school that has a mission that aligns with my views and so yes, I am allowed to wear "political" shirts. I wouldn't teach if I wasn't allowed to teach my kids about equal rights and justice. What then would be the point of education? If not to liberate.

Ok but BLM and LGBTQ are not political issues. It's human rights issues. War between two countries could be viewed more as political.

Good lord. Ignorance is bliss.

Leave it alone OP. You are overreacting. People are allowed to have different views than you

Guess what? People who are pro Palestine think it’s a human rights issue.

This. Or “statement” clothing.

Medhurst goes on RT, the Russian propaganda network.

He’s a fraud and a liar and if your kid is being taught by this person I’d be upset.
Just shows incredibly poor judgement and unawareness of the world.

(Ps I think it’s ok to criticize Israel. This guy is a propagandist.)

Teachers should not wear clothing that says anything. I don’t care if a t-shirt says “BLM”, “KKK”, “Support Israel”, “Trump”, “Biden”, “Yankees”, “Love”, or “Candy is Sweet“. None of it is appropriate.

How old is the teacher?

DH is Jewish and some of his cousins are pro-Palestinian rights. In fact, one in Israel works for an organization for Palestinians. My friend’s husband, also a Jew, wore a pro-Palestinian shirt. It makes me think this might be a generational difference. I am 39.

Teachers need to be careful not to offend. You will offend many Jews if you wear a pro-Palestine shirt. So why wear it? Save it for when you aren’t at school on the job.

She didn’t. She wore a shirt with a name on it that OP had to google to be offended about.

OP, I’m Jewish and have a hard time understanding your upset here. Teachers have First Amendment rights, although I would hesitate to call this T-shirt an espousal of any viewpoint at all. This is so tepid an expression of support for a Palestinian viewpoint by the teacher that, frankly, you remind me of anti critical race theory activists who think that any mention of African Americans is anti-white. Please stop.

Team teacher. The teacher probably makes $40K, unless you will purchase the teacher a new wardrobe, I am not sure what you can complain about.

#virtual signally; #performative politics. #lazy intellectualism. Teachers have first amendment rights, but they also have a responsibility to create a welcoming environment for all students. We have had teachers who distributed The Final Call in their classrooms - not appropriate. If there were Jewish teachers distributing Kahane materials in the classroom - that would similarly be inappropriate.

Richard Medhurst is a marxist journalist (his right) who openly supported Assad in Syria, and thinks Israel does not have a right to exist, and the US does not have the right to exist he is not a mere journalist who is critical of U.S. foreign policy or Israeli foreign policy. OP has a right to have an opinion on the messages that the teacher is broadcasting (this is also free speech). It could be the teacher doesn't know what they are wearing and got a free t-shirt somewhere. It is worth a conversation with the teacher, school, and maybe even in the kid. Can't really be an ally in anti-racism if tolerating/promoting Jew hatred.

Totally agree. I’m surprised this is even a question for some people.

I had a parent who wore a “I hate you” shirt everyday at pickup. At my old school a parent wore a “F*ck Y*u” shirt on a field trip. But yes my Love shirt is sending the wrong message. We surely don’t want more Love in this world.

Forgot to mention. There were zero asterisks on the shirt and this was 3rd grade. You know where kids can read
