teacher's t-shirt makes me deeply uncomfortable...

Anonymous
At elementary school dropoff this week I noticed my child's teacher wearing a t-shirt with a name and logo I had never seen before. I Googled it. It's an anti-Semitic and anti-Israel "independent journalist." We are Jewish. I am feeling... more than a little uncomfortable.

Would you say anything?

Who's the journalist?

What is the name of this journalist? It depends on whether we are talking about 1/6 antisemites, or just left wing journalists who are critical of Israel (but not anti Semitic).

OP, you'll have to describe the shirt specifically, because it's well known some people on here think any criticism of Israel is antisemitic. We need to judge for ourselves.

Yes, I would speak to an administrator. I would not speak directly to the teacher about it, even though I know people will whine about how unfair that is.

Wear racist shit to work, I'm talking to your boss - especially if you're around my kids.

Indisputably anti-Semitic or pro-Palestine?

It was a shirt for the podcast or YouTube channel or something of Richard Medhurst.

The fact that you do not name the “journalist” and makes me think that you conflate any criticism of Israel with antisemitism.

If it was an antisemitic organization, you would have named it because you know you would have gotten universal support on this site. People aren’t going to get mad because a teacher wore a shirt with the Al Jazeera logo. They’re just not. Sorry.

OP here - this was me. Richard Medhurst. He's not a real journalist.

Sorry, I really don't see what the issue is. People are allowed to support Palestine. Including your child's teacher.

Teachers shouldn’t be wearing political shirts

True but is it school appropriate?

Say what?

I wear all kinds of shirts in favor of BLM, LGBTQ rights etc. Luckily I teach in DC at a school that has a mission that aligns with my views and so yes, I am allowed to wear "political" shirts. I wouldn't teach if I wasn't allowed to teach my kids about equal rights and justice. What then would be the point of education? If not to liberate.

Ok but BLM and LGBTQ are not political issues. It's human rights issues. War between two countries could be viewed more as political.

…and religious freedom isn’t a human right???

Team teacher here. It’s all or nothing. You let them wear and legally allowed statement clothing or you don’t let them wear any.
