Thoughts on boys with painted nails

I.am fascinated that in 2021, we still have people who get their nether garments in a twist about such ridiculous non-problems.

I'm not a fan of painting kids' nails in general because I worry about toxins in nail polish and they tend to stick their hands in their mouths.

The whole "feminization" or whatever is lost on me. My son used to wear straight up Disney Princess dresses at pre-k, beads, purse, the works. He's fourteen and straight and the most boring wardrobe choices imaginable. If your son isn't straight or if he's trans, nail polish isn't going to tip the scales.

Totally fine. I would absolutely paint his nails without a second thought (just as I would for a DD) and even my DH, who is not all that progressive, wouldn't have thought twice about it. I'm actually quite surprised by the responders here who wouldn't.

I have painted my sons nails before. It’s super cute to see him excited about it.

Don’t worry, some day society will bully into thinking that anything remotely feminine is bad because who would want to be like a woman!??? You don’t have to do that for him.

Personally, I don’t like it.

And I think it’s partly because I know that the kid has asked for it and the parents don’t have the boundaries to say no. Therefore his nails are painted. The actual nail painting has no effect on me it just tells me who rules the roost.

Boundaries?? Who the F cares if the kid paints his nails? Would you let a girl do it? Or does she need boundaries for this terrible activity - nail painting.

No, I would not.

Loosen up. Really.

Ditto. It’s called different parenting styles. Try and be open minded. Like I said, it has no effect on me but I don’t like it. She asked for my thoughts so there you have it.

Nice try to clean up your mess. You said parents that allow it have no boundaries. Which is different than saying we all have our own parenting styles. Oh and let’s be open minded.

If it doesn't matter, why would parents say no? I don't say no to my kid just to show them who's boss, I don't have to prove that.

Oh, yeah, I stand by that. Can’t say “no” to the kid but that’s my opinion of the parents and I also said painting has no effect of me. It’s like when I see kids wearing their Halloween costumes in the spring time. It’s cute, but I can also tell those are the parents who can’t say no to the kids. She asked for my opinion and there you have it. I’m not sure why you’re so upset about it. Whatever, who cares! Have a nice day.

I worked with a male second grader about five years ago, he had his nails painted black. He was so excited about it. His dad took him to the mall to get the nail polish. His three older brothers were cool with it. His peers at school were fine with it. It was great to see him so happy over something so easy to do.

Why is your DH so upset about this? It's not permanent, and it brings your son joy.
FWIW, my high school DH lets girls paint his nails, which is clearly a form of heterosexual flirting, in case your DH is homophobic....

You're right he wanted candy and ice cream for breakfast and for dinner we're having chocolate cake.

My son is going into third and has an older sister. She asks for painted nails a few times a year.

He’s asked for them, too, and there’s really no good reason for me to say no. I warned him that it’s typically for girls, so people might make fun of him, but he doesn’t care.

It wears off in a week. There are a million more important things to care about.

So most of us don’t think wearing Halloween costumes in the spring is a big deal. It’s called pretend play and it’s developmentally normal. It’s not about not being able to say no.

Very odd way of looking at things.
