What's the best thing to get a gift card to?

Target is way too limiting, so, of the two, Amazon would be the better choice. I don’t get what’s so difficult about using a Visa gift card though — and someone might really appreciate the opportunity to make a significant purchase that’s not available through Amazon. This is intended to be a gift — not an opportunity to purchase classroom supplies. A fantastic tote bag, a relaxing weekend vacation, paying off a nagging bill, an extravagant dinner, or a wonderful winter coat are not going to be available at Amazon or Target.

LOL. What? Why are they hard to use? You literally use it like a check card or credit card. Literally. Everywhere.

Np I think they’re hard to use too. And then when you have $18 left, you have to make a purchase for $17.99 or tell the cashier to put $18 on that card. They used to have monthly fees too. And they cost money to purchase. I’d much prefer an amazon or target gift card. Or even a grocery store

agree amex and visa are hard to use online.

CASH is KING.

With that much money, I would ask. If you gave me a $700 gift cert to Olive Garden (one suggestion on the thread) I would laugh hysterically then be mad. Personally I would choose in order:1) cash, 2) grocery store, 3) target.

If you have $18 left, you split the payment. You slide the card through the machine. No need for a cashiers. You use it on Amazon. No need for customer service.

It deducts the balance and what is owed you pay with whatever you want. Cash, another card, gift card.

I don’t understand how this is complicated. I guess I’m the only one who grew up with a parent that had it rough and was given cards, food stamps, donations for hard times.

The WORST was being forced to buy from a merchant where the pricing didn’t give the best bang for your buck. Or you know you want to use the card to get something only available on sale at X store, but you didn’t get a card for X store. And the store you have a card from you don’t care for and maybe their prices aren’t as competitive.

Eh. Poor people problems I guess.

Always has been, always will be. At least until Elon welcomes the aliens and destroys all powerful world currencies.

Agree.

A gift is a gift, my vote to give as much flexibility to the recipient in using the funds as possible. You don’t know what people need. Hell, she may need new windshield wipers or brakes. Or want to gift her distant relatives with weekly dinners since she can’t be there to support their cancer treatment. Maybe she is terrified and pregnant and wants to pay for an abortion. Maybe she wants to chip into a family fund to keep someone off the street and pay one of their bills. Who knows?

But eff adding profit to Amazon and Target’s bottom line of revenue just because its “easy”. It’s not easy or convenience for everyone. We don’t know the need.

I don't think I've spent $750 at Union Market in 3 years total together. Please don't do that!

Especially if this is a teacher. My best friend is a teacher who has a running Amazon list for her classroom that friends and family purchase from throughout the year. $750 would go a looooong way to support her classroom! Heck, she easily spends over that amount just in prep for a new school year.

A lot of credit card machines can't split the payment though. They can do it with gift cards, but not those dumb visa gift cards.

They are not hearty‘s lol. My kids receive visa gift cards for birthdays and Christmas. I buy them off of them because the kids preferred cash so I end up using the gift cards. I have never had an issue

Since Apple Pay has taken front and Center as the anti Corona method of payment, it’s much easier.
Unless of course you’re at Macy’s. On their old system.

I agree that visa gift cards can be difficult to use - a lot of times you can't use it online without a PIN, or you have to register it because it needs a zip code but not YOUR zip code, some random zip code... I was trying to register one for my husband last year but the bank it was originally issued from was sold and we couldn't do it on the new bank's website... etc. And I have run into situations using them in person where the cashier needs to know exactly how much to charge to the card so if you're trying to split it, you have to know what the balance is.

They can be set up in different ways (pre-paid debit card, gift card, etc) so it's probably fine to buy, just know what you're getting and how it will work, potential fees, etc.

I would go with Amazon.

Gross. Who actually eats there?

I agree Visa gift cards can be hard to use if you're not using the exact amount, so what I do is buy whatever gift card I would actually use with my Visa gift card. I think Visa gift card is the best way to go, especially for that amount of money.
