Would love recommendations for TV and movies; extra points for things that don’t involve the Avengers, Star Wars characters, or stupid violence/sex just for the sake of stupid violence/sex. (I’m not opposed to either, but the usage has to advance the plot and/or be part of a larger message.)

my son and I have the hardest time finding stuff we both like! Here's a few ideas that we've both liked: Rain Man, Stand By Me, Catch Me if you Can, School of Rock

Yes, this is the best answer. Not only will you both love it, but it will inspire some good conversations.

Thank you all, DCUM Brain Trust! Keep the good ideas coming.

For the Friday Night Lights boosters, do you mean the movie with James van der Beek, or the series?

I’m introducing my 16 year old to all of the Coen Brothers movies and we started with Big Lebowski, because I thought that’d be the best introduction, and of course he loved it. Last night we watched Barton Fink, had a long in-depth discussion afterwards, it was fantastic. Barton Fink is so rich, so many jumping off points for digging deeper. We even got into McCarthyism because of the movie last night. Brilliant film from start to finish.
