Kid sentenced to 24 years in prison for killing a mother and child while drag racing

He took two lives directly because of his selfishness. He shouldn't be allowed any more freedom for the remainder of his own life.

Plea deals are such crap. It is not just to discourage somebody from exercising their constitutional right to a trial by making the disparity between sentences so big.

Our criminal Justice system sucks. Other countries manage to dispense justice and have law and order without overcrowded prisons.

wow. why?

I’m confused why you are confused. Look at him. It’s very clear why he decided to go to trial.

You are right. If these two men did the same thing, there is clearly injustice in one receiving 4x more time than the other.

I have heard that the system would collapse without plea bargains because courts are so backed up. But that is something that we, as a society, decide. Our funding priorities (building football stadiums, giving tax breaks to the likes of Amazon!) say a lot about us.

Here's the whole sentencing. The judge explains why he makes this ruling. The defendant will get out at the age of 45 if he serves the whole sentence. 40 if he serves 85%.

I have no idea what his lawyers were thinking.

I agree. Driving like he did was no different than shooting a gun into a crowd. You know there's a high likelihood somebody is likely going to end up dead even if you can say "but I didn't mean to hit anyone." The surviving members of the victim's family deserve to know they don't have to see that guy going about his day for 24 years while they'll never see the victims again.

I think he actually pled guilty.

The mother he killed was only 24 herself.

+1. Well said.

For people who think prisons are the best solution to the issues of public safety and justice, I recommend the work of Angela Davis. There are better and more effective solutions than prisons.

I would click that link but I remember the outpouring of fury a month ago when two D.C. teens killed a man while trying to steal his car. Where was the 'prisons aren't the best solution' logic then?

Actually 24 years will get him well past the worst of his toxic testosterone induced recklessness that resulted in the deaths of two human beings.

What do you think would be a better sentence for two vehicular homicides?

Does the world plenty of good. I've seen minor weed dealers with longer sentences.

So? Every single person in prison for a drug crime should be released and their felonies expunged. None of these long prison sentences does the world any good.

Agree wholeheartedly.

It was there, you just didn’t see it. I mean, maybe not fury (I don’t feel furious), but prison abolition is a concept that has been around for decades.

Yeah, sorry I don't agree. Murderers, rapists, and child pedophiles need to be locked away from everyone else. You don't rehabilitate that.

And this kid was warned before about his driving speeds. He chose to drag race on a crowded thoroughfare in Tampa.

This woman and her child are gone forever.

DCUM when the criminal is black: This is disgusting, where are the parents? Lock the parents up too! What's wrong with their community!?

DCUM when the criminal is white: Poor BB, this is unfair.
