Sydney for a girl?

I can't not hear the voice from Scream when I hear that name, but I'm probably really dating myself.

I've never warmed to this name, sorry.

The "dney" sound is nasal and grating to me, but that's just me.

Also not a fan of city names for people. But use it if you love it.

I like it. As someone who narrowly escaped being named Adelheid (thanks dad!) definitely better than Adelaide

I posted that. I wasn't actually serious....just seemed more believable than Perth or Canberra.

I like Adelaide a lot more than Sydney, FWIW.

I'm sorry, maybe it's the New Yorker in me, but this is an old Jewish man's name.

Won’t most people associate Dagny with Ayn Rand?

Yep. I don't mind that it's a city name. It's the old man vibes that I can't get behind.

A friend has a daughter named Sydney. The kid’s friends, teachers, and coaches have shortened it to Syd, which my friend hates since she thinks it sounds like an old man.

I get where she's coming from, but since she's stuck with it, thinking of Cyd Charisse might make it more tolerable.

Interesting, I don't know much about Ayn Rand, but the name Dagny is Scandinavian. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dagny_(name)

I love it and always have.

Interesting history with SSA rankings.

It ranked only sporadically between 1900 - 1981, never higher than the 500s. Then it rose steadily during the 80s and 90 and peaked at 23 between 1999-2003. Its fallen back to about 200. Feels at bit like Penelope -- random, obscure then v popular. Id rather give my kid that name when its ranked around 200 than during its moment in the sun.

It's OK. It's better than Torrance or Biker.
