I have a pure-bred dog so am not anti-breeder but the warning signs posted by a PP above scream unethical. Can’t meet mother? No interview process? No pedigree provides? No health clearances?
The other situation described above sounds more borderline but I would be concerned buying from someone that had no health clearances or family history on the dogs. Yes, they are farmers and do this as part of their business—sounds like they treat the dogs well but how do you know the parents aren’t dead at 3 with cancer or other genetic disorders? It’s a bit of a gamble. I had friends that got a golden doodle from a similar situation. |
| It's going to be very tricky to get a Cavapoo from anyone other than a puppy mill. Responsible breeders want to contribute to the genetics of a purebred dog line. Cavapoos are trendy, small and you don't have to even show a pedigree. Classic puppy mill dog type. |
Np I really hate it when people who have no idea what it is like to work at a rescue to find a good home are called "crazy" No, I do not work for a rescue organization but, if you read one more " I have to re-home my puppy because they are work" than you may understand why the rescue organizations try to weed out the flaky people. PP you are the worst. |
No, all breeders aren’t puppy mills. But anyone who makes their living brokering a dozen kinds of dogs IS a puppy mill or highly shady at best. True breeders aren’t making a living doing this. They have their dogs in conformation or agility or otherwise earning titles and improving the breed. They aren’t cranking out litter after litter and handing out puppies to anyone who shows up. |
Yes to all of this. Our breeder does not make her living from breeding CKCs. Takes a least a year to get a puppy from her. You must meet her, you meet the dam and all of the litter. (Full disclosure- I don’t know a thing about Cavapoos or any of the other Poodle mix breeds.) |
This argument is so disingenuous. The so-called “responsible breeders” have produced a population of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels that are commonly prone to a huge list of genetic diseases, including heart failure. The “responsible breeders” could breed those diseases out of the population, but they don’t. I think cavaliers are wonderful dogs, but I’m not paying a fortune for a “pure bred” dog that will die young. Varying the gene pool can only improve the genetics of a part-cavalier puppy. Same with German Shepards. The “breed standard” calls for a hind leg that is as close to possible to a 90 degree angle, so now most look deformed and the breed has significant hip issues. Don’t get me started on bulldogs. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/animalia/wp/2016/08/02/why-breeding-bulldogs-is-borderline-inhumane/ These breeds are a mess because these breeders place the “purity” of the dogs’ bloodline and the “breed standard” above the health of the puppies, every day. They are not any better than puppy mills, they’re just bigger snobs. |
The worst people are those who’d rather have a dog sit in a crate at a shelter than be adopted, on the 1% chance that it might not work out. Millions of people who work and have children and who don’t have a fenced yard buy dogs and give them loving, happy homes. They buy them, because they can’t adopt a homeless dog because apparently having a job is disqualifying. We adopted a dog 20 years ago from a shelter that performed a home visit. I was happy to show them our home, and we were approved. We got a great dog that lived a long happy life. But we would not have been approved today. We worked outside of the home, and lived in a town house with a small courtyard. We bought our next two dogs from breeders. |
Clearly I don't think those types of people you mention are responsible breeders. I think noone should breed GSD that walk slanty- the breeders I have known that I respect aren't show dogs they are working dogs who have to have good conformation. They don't breed until the dog has full OFA rads of hips and elbows. They don't breed for looks. These breeders are probably one in 300 or so. And noone should breed English Bulldogs. No. Stop forever. And don't necessarily believe that one outcrossing is going to help eliminate all of the genetic bottleneck that is the CKCS. And what I said still stands- Cavapoos are most likely from a Puppy mill. |
