Can we boycott Georgia?

7 white men signing a racist voter suppression law under a painting of a slave plantation.

"In short, the Callaway Plantation is a monument to Georgia's history of brutal white supremacy that unfortunately didn't disappear when Mariah Callaway and the other slaves were emancipated in 1865. By the 1890s, Georgia's white ruling class enacted a series of harsh Jim Crow laws to segregate all public facilities and block Black people from voting. The state, for all of Atlanta's 'Too Busy To Hate' bluster, was a KKK hotbed in the 1960s' civil rights era, and in the 1980s.

"Georgia blazed a trail into the new era of mass incarceration and voter suppression, epitomized by Brian Kemp and his purges of legitimate voters and other Jim Crow-inspired tactics. In 2021, the irony of Kemp signing this bill -- that makes it illegal to give water to voters waiting on the sometimes 10-hour lines that state policies create in mostly Black precincts -- under the image of a brutal slave plantation is almost too much to bear.

"The symbolism is no accident. Brian Kemp and his white henchmen have created an image for our times, in working to continue a tradition of inhumanity and white supremacy that now spans centuries, from the human bondage that took place behind the placid scenery of Brickhouse Road in Wilkes County, to the suppression now hidden behind a phony facade of 'voter integrity.' This legacy is a crime against humanity, and it cannot stand."

Which elements of the Georgia law are people most concerned with? I skimmed an article, but nothing seemed particularly bad.

Boycott the GOP. Boycott any Democrats or Independents who don't come out against what the GOP in GA just did. I don't care who they are. It's like finding out your best friend beats his wife and kids. You need to do everything you can to make him stop and you do not remain friends and look the other way because he's your oldest friend and he was your best man. He's an unrepentant wife and child beater who is a danger to them. There is no gray here. You either support democracy and everyone's right to vote or you don't. Don't boycott Georgia, boycott everyone who supports voter suppression or is complicit in it. Boycott the companies nationally who will not come out against voter suppression. It's their employees votes that are being suppressed. IT's their customers votes that are being suppressed. If they can't stand up for their employees' and their customers' rights to vote, don't support them. The GOP is no longer the party of Lincoln. They are the party of the Confederacy and the Dixiecrats.

This is all true but I don't see how any of it helps in any direct way. Truly.

Tweet to them and let them know publicly of your concerns.

LOL.
And, you people accuse Republicans of "cancel culture?" You all are hilarious.

I am okay with canceling racists (ie, GA GOP).

It also cuts the time people have to request an absentee ballot and limits where ballot drop boxes can be placed and when they can be accessed.

Democrats and voting rights groups say the law will disproportionately disenfranchise voters of color.

Why do democrats and voting rights groups act like voters of color are idiots who cannot comply with the simple rules above? There is nothing particularly disenfranchising in this regarding voters of color.

This entire thing is an attempt to ensure that GA cannot go blue like it did last year. Kemp and the SOS admitted there was NOTHING wrong with the voting in GA. They just don't like the results.

And it is quite telling that you are more concerned with arbitrary rules that were not a problem in the first place, and outlawing bringing water to voters in line, rather than being concerned that citizens are forced to wait 10 hours to vote in the first damn place.

There is a direct connection between the 2020 election results and the law. Do you honestly believe that the motive behind this law is election security? If so, I have a used car to sell you. Get real. The entire motive is to make it harder for AA to vote, and the outcome will be fewer AA voting. The GA GOP knows that. Cause and effect. The motive is entirely racist!! Reps can't win on ideas, so must win by other means. Ant-Democratic. Anti-American.

Hi - sorry, I wasn’t asking about motives, I was asking which elements of the law do people think are problematic?

limiting places and hours of voting
removal of voters from the rolls
the ability for a political party to take over county functions if the political party doesn't like the results
after the long lines are created as a result of limiting polling places and machines, banning people to give food and water to those in line

I could go on, but seriously this whole thing is ridiculous because it is premised on the big lie, and the GOP knows it and does it anyhow.

+1 There’s a long thread on this already so we don’t have to reinvent the wheel:

Then, I propose we eliminate all polling places in the counties with less than 100,000 people. I propose we allow the Postal Service to close whatever USPS locations they wish (ie, rural stores (ie, unprofitable ones)). I propose we allow the USPS to charge cost basis rates on First Class mail rather than a single national standard. I propose we stop subsidizing rural telephone service, because it is costing me extra money. I propose we stop subsidizing farmers, who cant live without subsidies. I note all of the foregoing save money, and our debts is getting worse. Just being fiscally prudent!!

Simple. If I punch you, I am accountable for the damage, because my act has a known and predictable outcome-injury to you. GA GOP's law is designed to reduce AA turnout in elections. Their motive is racist, and the GA GOP should be called out for what it is. Racist!!!!
