Expectant and Postpartum Moms
|
I've done both - bikini and maternity tankini. I don't know - I think at some point you have to say WTF and go with it. I do think, believe it or not, that it is almost easier to ear a bikini 6-7-8 months pregnant than it is 3-4-5 months. At least later on, as PPs have noted, everybody is just so focussed on the belly that they don't notice the huge butt (speaking for myself, not others). I never loved the fact that my thighs got jiggly while pregnant, and yes, I do think a tan helps.
I don't think spray tanning a few times is going to hurt. I mean, by eating regular fruits and veggies (not organic) you are probably consuming more chemicals than if you spray tan.... |

OP, please try not to worry so much!
Your body is beautiful, and I would encourage you to bare as much as possible (avoid the ruffles, skirt, extra fabric, etc) because the parts you are trying to hide will become even more noticeable. And as PPs have said, people will only be impressed by the baby in your tummy! Covering that bump would be a crime, in my opinion
Were I lucky enough to go to a warm beach in this my 30th week of pregnancy, I would wear my sexy string bikini, partly because the strings make it adjustable, and also because I feel sexy!!! And I could not care less about the cellulite that is running down my bottom into my thighs

| I agree with PPs... much easier to rock a bikini when you're farther along that earlier in your pregnancy. With my last pregnancy, I wore my regular bikini (which had an adjustable top) all the way through the summer until the pools closed (baby was born at the end of Sept). This year, I hope to be as brave but I'm due earlier in the summer so we'll see! I am going to check out Jcrew because of the mix and match styles. |
| I just find it sad that anyone would be embarrassed by their pregnant body. |

I wish I was taking a beach trip while I was pregnant- like most of the PPs said, I would be totally fine in a bikini right now with my big ol' beach-ball belly... of course, we're headed to the beach for a week when I'll be about 3 months post-partum-- there is nothing cute about a formerly pregnant lady in a bikini, so I bought a maternity tankini a few months ago.
Just go with it, and don't worry about how you look in a suit while you're pregnant- if you weren't pregnant, the bathing suit wouldn't be covering your arms anyway- just enjoy that right now, you have a reason to jiggle! |
Oh please!! It's not as if the OP is saying that she hates being pregnant and is disgusted that she is having a baby. It's one thing to be Gisele Bundchen with a cute baby bump and no fat anywhere else. For the rest of us, it's a bit mortifying to squeeze into a bikini or tankini with a huge butt, flabby thighs, and soft arms. Sorry, but it's true!!! And that doesn't make us bad people! |
Give it a rest. Pregnancy affects all of us differently. I know that for me, especially with this pregnancy, my thighs and arms have gotten noticeably fatter. Yes, in large part due to inactivity (I blame the cold winter), but also because this is my third and my body just never quite recovered from the other two. I am not embarrassed by the belly by any stretch - but I really could do without the changes to the rest of my body. |
| I am about 28 weeks and tried on the maternity suits at Motherhood recently, my biggest gripe is that they were all regular bottoms. I would feel so much more comfortable in a "swim shorts" style of bottom or swim skirt kind of bottom like they sale in the Land's End catalog. I love the options that they have in Land's End, too bad they don't do maternity swim suits. |
| Say more about the Mystic tan option. Can we spray tan every few weeks? I'm not headed south but I look like the walking dead. |
| I had a different perspective on the maternity bathing suit. Whereas in a regular bathing suit you can have all sorts of insecurity about being thin, etc....you AREN'T supposed to be thin in a maternity bathing suit! I actually kinda loved that. Certainly it helped that I shopped for one at 15w so I wasn't huge. I bought a 2 piece but the top was a halter top and long (no exposed belly)...I thought it was super comfortable and way better than the regular one-piece suits I usually buy. |
Target's Liz Lange maternity has swimsuits with "athletic bottom" or "boy short" type options. (Online only.) When I'm pregnant, it's not just my belly that grows, thanks.... |
| Ask your doctor about the Mystic Tan, not the members of the board who may or may not know. I LOVE doing the Mystic Tan but I'm not doing it during my pregnancy. I don't want to risk it. Obviously it's not that important to me or I would ask my doc. |
| I was trying to spend as little $$ as possible on maternity stuff, so I wore my old bikini, but never without a tank top over it. I was less worried about how I looked than about tanning my tummy. Something told me that when it shrank back down again it would only look worse if it had been tanned. |
This holds true only for scar tissue or stretch marks, not regular skin. |

I actually lucked out and found a super cute maternity tankini--spent way more money than I wanted to, but I love it! I may even try to have it altered to wear after I deliver, too. It doesn't have much in the way of top support, but I'm not an athletic swimmer, I'm a floater, so that was less important to me.
I also agree that have less self esteem issues while pregnant--I felt pretty super cute in my maternity bathing suit! I'm almost positive the chemical in topically applied self tanners is safe for use during pregnancy, however your skin may be more sensitive so always to as patch test even if you've used the same product before. I'd also avoid inhaling the spray/fumes from a spray-on type of application (home or salon) if possible. |
