Vote for McK ES elementary name

Although.....would they be the Cardinal Cardinals? Hahahaha

I hadn’t thought of that. Hilarious.

As long as they’re not the baby sharks....

Westover is the name of well known plantation in Virginia. A descendent of the family who owned it was a leader of the Massive Resistance movement opposing school integration in the state. Even though the school obviously would be named after the area rather than the plantation, APS was uncomfortable with the association.

Cardinal is the mascot of the current McKinley mascot but also a compass or geographical reference. Kaleidoscope for those who don't know is the name of the current school's arts exemplary program and many at the school are pushing for that to move to the new school.

I agree these are ridiculous aspirational names for both the new Key and McKinley buildings.

Correct, the design of the school emphasizes geography. The different floors are named after continents, the rooms are named after countries...

Cardinal Elementary is the best of the choices IMO.

My kid is in 5th grade at McK and the "Kaleidoscope" program is total BS. It's just words, not an actual thing.

Yep. 3 former McK students. Looks good on paper but it doesn't actually do anything.

OMG. No to kaleidoscope. No one will spell it correctly, it’s too long for swag and the EP hasn’t been put into practice in years.

It’s a huge stretch to say Westover plantation is well known, but I can see why APS is avoiding it. I guess Compass is OK, but I like Cardinal better. I sure hope the creepy pic of Pres. McKinley stays behind in the move.

Yeah, I'd never heard of it, but I'm not from Virginia. It does have a Wikipedia page, hah. I think the Massive Resistance association made it just too much.

What's the weirdest thing about all these "associations with" things is that literally no one even knows the backstory on this stuff until someone digs it up and amplifies it and gets everyone all riled up about an issue that wasn't even an issue before you picked at the scab to "educate" everyone to be outraged. Hey I get that no one wants to attend Ted Bundy High School or Hitler University. But Westover is so benign as to not even be distinguishable from a name like Eastman or Northside. Westover is literally a random street name as far as most of the population of Western Civilization is concerned. Pretty sure there's a Westover Street in every Anytown,USA.

And so what if you dig around and find out that Westover is *also* the name of some plantation that had a random descendant who once upon a time opposed school integration?

Know who else opposed Department of Education's imposing school integration via busing a LONG time ago??? Our Democrat President, Joe Biden.

Things change. No one literally thinks anyone going to that school or living in Arlington or sitting on the APS school board thinks that naming the school "Westover" would signal support for segregation, any more than they think voting for Joe Biden does. It's ridiculous.
