The Discovery mascot is the explorer. I am not excited by any option. With Compass you are charting your own journey??? Then again is compass outdated already? Should it be GPS Elementary? I do like Westover Elementary.

GPS Ele! Love it! could be moral compass but CB doesn't have one so that won't work.

I feel liked Compass or Cardinal are the most bland and therefore preferable. Kaleidoscope and the other options are so aspirational as to be stupid. It’s an elementary school for pete’s sake, don’t overthink this.

This is a very good question.

Did research that led to being able to combat yellow fever. With all the military base names up for review, that one isn’t on the list. But probably there’s someone in Arlington who takes offense.

Or Westview?

Doesn’t the door face East though?

Google the recent ArlNow article about naming the new elementary school at the former Key immersion site. School Board has said they don't want to go through a debate over naming any building after a person right now. That took Reed and McKinley off the table, just like it took Grace Hopper out of the running for the new school at Key.

Even though the school obviously would be named after the area rather than the plantation, APS was uncomfortable with the association.

What's the weirdest thing about all these "associations with" things is that literally no one even knows the backstory on this stuff

What's weird is other people assuming that because they don't know something, no one does. I'm not a huge history buff, but I'd heard of Westover Plantation before I ever moved to Virginia.

And so the average 8, 9, 10 year old is going to be traumatized at having to attend Westover Elementary because you, a grown adult, has “heard of Westover Plantation?” Okay then. Sounds valid.

At this point we can’t name an elementary school after Obama due to his homophobic comments in favor of defining marriage as between a man and a woman. Or do we get to overlook it after his views “evolved” on the issue?

Cannot name the school kaleidoscope. The kids will not be able to spell it. Remember, in APS we do not teach spelling.

Many staff/families from McKinley want to name the school McKinley and many in the neighborhood want to name the school Reed. Both regard their preference as "keeping" the name. That combined with the direction from school board to avoid names resulted in an effort to find another option. Everyone likes Westover but, plantation. Also it can't share a name with any other school in the DMV, and better yet it can't share an obvious mascot (e.g. Discovery explorers). I invite you to offer a better alternative within these strictures.
