Now, how 'bout them Fighting Irish?

Ah, whataboutism exists in Cars and Transporation, not just Politics? Wow.

OP. Also a Viking descendant living in Viking territory who understand that she’s part of the dominant white culture and isn’t offended by “the Vikes.”

Where do you live?

I’m Jewish and let me tell you if a car company tried to name their SUVs Ashkenazi, Mizrahi and Sephardic — well they wouldn’t even dare.

But corporations have been raiding Native culture to make money for way too long and it needs to stop.

Yup.

Godforsaken obnoxious Redskins fans swore "it'll never happen" - but it did, thankfully.

That’s such a good point.

OK weirdo. Let's class an entire group of people into "assholes" because of what kind of car they drive. Really?

Now that OP mentions it, everyone I know who owns a Jeep Cherokee (not a lot) is an a-hole.

2 out of the 3 are even MAGAs.

Now you know how BMW drivers feel.

I’m Choctaw and drive a Geand Cherokee. I’m not offended on behalf of my people and they could change it to Grand Choctaw for all I care.

Is this new information to you, PP, that the same type of people who are drawn to a particular car share similar values? It’ll shock the hell out of you that Suburu drivers tend to be crunchy, I guess? That Volkswagen drivers tend to be a little aggressive behind the wheel, tailgating, speeding, passing suddenly when it’s not really necessary? That BMW drivers have been judged for decades?

Jeep oughta change the name but from that statement they’re going with the “but it’s an honor!” OP.

There are stigmas and stereotypes associated with practically everything involving people. Oftentimes, you will be judged by what you do as a profession, how you look/dress, and yes what you drive. A major bummer is I tend to pick cars that are judged pretty poorly.

Jeep isn’t the only one using the name. Cherokee, Inc. is a big company with products everywhere.

How should we handle things if people from the Delaware, Miami, Sioux, Iowa, Spokane, Rappahannock, Peoria, Omaha, Mohave, Creek, Crow, Seneca, Ottawa, or Sioux begin to raise objections to the use of their tribe names? Is a non-commercial use ok? Naming your kid Cheyenne? What about tribes with names like Mohawk? Are the Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves or Kansas City Chiefs sports teams in the clear?

Everything was taken from Native Americans and their population decimated. For many Americans these people are invisible outside of the occasional visit to a casino on a reservation. Do other Native American tribes object to the use of their name in non-disparaging ways? I don’t have a problem with it, but I didn’t even know it was an issue until today. They have every right to fight for their culture and heritage. I don’t think they will win this battle now, but it’s a conversation worth having. Jeep’s response that the Cherokee name was carefully selected and nurtured over the years to honor and celebrate native Americans comes across like a tone deaf lie.

Honestly, I think it’s stupid. Are we really going to demand that names of cities, business, brands, products be entirely renamed? I hate the “demand” culture. And then, watch, they’ll ask people to boycott Jeep if Jeep demures. There’s only so long this game will go over well in the court of public opinion. Just my two cents.

As an Ashkenazi Jew I'm now amusing myself trying to imagine driving a Kia Ashkenaz. Presumably it would kvetch a lot.

Is that what they said? Ewwww.

They will rename it because now the brand is tainted and not as many customers will want to buy it. That is really all they care about.
