Nobody likes my cake :-(

Pearls before swine, OP. It happens.

I would love it. After the holidays, I want a break from all the rich-tasting foods. This cake sounds light and perfect.

+1
Oranges in cake? Blech.

If you make it a la mode the teenagers might like it

It sounds delicious! I would love to have a piece with a cup of tea. Enjoy it all yourself.

Sounds delicious! My immediate family generally likes my cakes. My in-laws on the other hand prefer store bought things from the grocery store. One time I baked a flourless chocolate cake with fresh whipped cream and raspberry on the side. They didn’t want any. My SIL pulled out cupcakes from Giant and proceeded to lick the frosting off while loudly moaning about how good it was. Everyone took one and couldn’t stop praising it. No one except my DH and kids ate my cake. At least I got to take it home.

OP here.

Aw, thank you, everyone. You've made me feel better.

I made my family rich, buttery cakes and pastries with dollops of home-made whipped cream all through Christmas and thought we should have something festive but light this weekend.

Apparently they're still in artery-clogging mode...

Well, as you said, more for me

I love a light sponge cake, but I don't think I'd care for the filling. If it were strawberries in a strawberry jam with some whipped cream, yes. Or a chocolate pastry cream in the middle with nothing outside and maybe a brush of rum syrup. Or cannoli filling.
I often just eat the entirety of things I make, so no judgement from me if you eat it all yourself!

I would hate your cake. You lost me at the “soaked...” part. But I would absolutely love love some buttered popcorn, or even a brownie. Seriously, your cake sounds wonderful, but is that the kind of dessert that your family usually eats? It might be a know-your-audience issue. More for you though! I hope they at least appreciated your efforts!

That sounds awful to me, OP. Sponge cake isn't good to begin with, and then to make it citrus-y? Awful.

OP I have a similar palate and similar issue. I would love your cake and I have made sponges before. However, my dh and kids would not like it. They are strict American cake fans, preferably chocolate with store bought icing.

How did you make the clementine-cider combo?

Why do you bother making anything for them?

Great story! Glad you got to take it home. Grocery store cupcakes are generally gross!
