| Why on earth would you ever want to go to a school out west, especially paying those astronomical OOS fees? UVA is a much more prestigious school than any of those Claremont colleges, and a better deal for IS students too. For our family the choice to attend UVA was clear for our DC, and with the money we saved by staying in state, we have enough to splurge on a brand name for grad school. |
That’s great for your family. If you don’t get SLACs, you don’t get it. But some of us are baffled that you’d send you kid to sit in classes of 200 taught by TAs and have them crowded out for research opportunities for grad student. Plus the whole big sports, Greek life atmosphere is not what I frantically for my kids. You do you. |
UVA is a fairly prestigious, somewhat selective school, but not on the level of Pomona. The Claremont consortium is a truly special place, while UVA is a standard, if frat- and sorority-heavy, flagship likely to be populated with tons of the kids you know from HS. Certainly a fine option if it’s what you can afford and your kid is not adventurous, but a lot of kids and families want more. |
Pomona is NOT more prestiigous than UVA. UVA is one of the most prestigious colleges in America, with an unmatched history and legacy. Students are smart, savvy, and go on to lead paradigm-shifting careers. Pomona? Have people outside of Southern California even heard of it? UVA is not "standard" and you don't need to interact with all the kids you knew from HS if you do attend. It's a superior option to basically 99.9 percent of all private schools in America. It's the elite of the elite. Pomona? Just a small, lesser-known LAC along with the rest of the Claremont schools. |
Pomona is definitely more selective. Hard to say which is more prestigious. Go with what you like. Plenty of rational people would prefer UVA even if it were the same price as Pomona. Plenty wouldn't. |
Truly no one outside of Virginia thinks UVA is "the elite of the elite." FWIW I would also rate Pomona above UVA, and most employers and academics would, too. |
| Why in the world is there a discussion of UVA in a thread about visiting the Claremont Colleges? Excellent trolling though—hopefully the conversation can go back to something helpful to the OP. |
|
I am OP and want to say thanks to all of the helpful posters.
I really do not know why every single thread in this forum is taken over by the UVA booster- is this always the same person? I have nothing against UVA and know it is a fine university but it is in no way relevant to my questions about the Claremont Colleges. I wish that Jeff would block this poster. |
Pomona is far more prestigious than UVA. |
| OP to answer your Q about the 5Cs (my DH & I went there in the 90s), someone would apply to Pomona & not to CMC if they were politically liberal or at least didn't want a conservative student body. That was the rough differential between the schools, as a PP has noted: Pitzer=super crunchy & the weakest academics (probably not even true nowadays); Scripps=women's college with beautiful campus & great arts; HMC=hardcore STEM & hardcore 5c parties; CMC=mainstream business/conservative types; & Pomona=not as liberal as Pitzer but the best academics of the 5 (I am obviously biased & kind of laughing at myself in hindsight since HMC obviously was the toughest academically). Going to Pomona, I had numerous friends from Pitzer, cross registered for classes at Scripps, & did my work study job at HMC. As others have said, you can easily visit multiple campuses in a day. I took my DC out there about a year ago for college visits & we looked at HMC & Pomona. All easily walkable from one another. Agree with another PP that the consortium is definitely not just in name only. Loved/love the 5Cs! All would be great places for your kid to end up; you should pick the one(s) they like best. |
| If you're making the trip North the UCSB might want to take the long way out of town and visit Pepperdine also. It's a decent school that sounds like it might be a safety for your child. Has a good mix of students and of course in an amazing location, hard to beat the 'Bu. |
Why does every thread on colleges ultimately involve UVA? |
The obsession is real |
I wonder at times if there are reverse trolls looking to inject UVA into everything to piss people off. Or it could just be some people who can't help but tout UVA over any other school mentioned. Not sure. |
I was thinking your first thought as well. It makes more sense than the latter, sometimes it's just blatant trolling to spin the discussion sideways because they know people will bite. |
