OP to answer your Q about the 5Cs (my DH & I went there in the 90s), someone would apply to Pomona & not to CMC if they were politically liberal or at least didn't want a conservative student body. That was the rough differential between the schools, as a PP has noted: Pitzer=super crunchy & the weakest academics (probably not even true nowadays); Scripps=women's college with beautiful campus & great arts; HMC=hardcore STEM & hardcore 5c parties; CMC=mainstream business/conservative types; & Pomona=not as liberal as Pitzer but the best academics of the 5 (I am obviously biased & kind of laughing at myself in hindsight since HMC obviously was the toughest academically). Going to Pomona, I had numerous friends from Pitzer, cross registered for classes at Scripps, & did my work study job at HMC. As others have said, you can easily visit multiple campuses in a day. I took my DC out there about a year ago for college visits & we looked at HMC & Pomona. All easily walkable from one another. Agree with another PP that the consortium is definitely not just in name only. Loved/love the 5Cs! All would be great places for your kid to end up; you should pick the one(s) they like best.
