We must ignore them. They are literally pushing for more deaths.

Do you also complain that people who want restaurants and other non-essential activities to stay open are pushing for more deaths?

I couldn't agree more and am really disappointed with MCPS and their non-scientific "health metrics" which we will certainly never meet, meaning no in-person school for our kids this year.

This isn’t about the kids. This is a workplace safety issue. The sooner you realize that and understand that your feelings as a parent are completely irrelevant, the sooner you will understand the reality of the situation.

Why the hell would a doctor write about schools? Maybe a teacher should write about the medical workplace?

Seriously. Unless teachers can be outfitted with covid floor level ppe, no way they should be forced to teach in person.

Fantastic article! No one can explain why politicians think that closing schools will actually reduce the spread when bars, restaurants, and large/small social gatherings without masks are the biggest drivers of the increasing numbers.

My young kids (5 and 7) are at a critical stage of brain development and they can't get that period back in a year or two.

You over estimate what goes on during the school day.

Yet somehow daycare workers and private school teachers and Catholic school teachers and German teachers are teaching in person ...

1. Cases have never been higher in MD.
2. Hospitalizations are EXPLODING and will be back to spring pandemic levels in the next few weeks.
3. Deaths are still low but will inevitably increase as hospitalization stays extend.

The factor to watch right now is hospitalizations. The curve is practically vertical. It's an extremely worrying sign.

No one should be talking about opening schools unless they have a death wish for the state of Maryland.

My neighbor's father is literally a pandemic expert and her kids are in school, at his urging.

My best friend's son is married to a veterinarian who had a room mate who went on to study psychology (you wouldn't know him, he lives in Canada). Anyway he has a word for this persuasion trick. Its like, appeal to authority or something.

That PP mentioned pandemic experts. He is one of the top in the country. He's isolating himself (age-related), but doesn't see young kids in schools as particularly risky. Choose to believe me, or not.

Not. Besides, if the Trumpkins did one thing to completion, it was to discredit the credibility of experts. My opinion is now just as important as that jerk off pandemic expert.

I'm guessing you're a pandemic expert? If not, just a whiner?

I do understand the reality of the situation, which is that the education of public school kids in the DMV falls below the interests of private daycare kids, wealthy private school kids, Catholic school kids, bar patrons, gym goers, ESCAPE ROOMS, and pretty much everything else.

There are so few complaints about it that I don't come across them. The crazies are all focused on schools. Nothing inside should be open except essential services. Education and entertainment are not essential in a pandemic.

We've discussed the differences between apples and oranges ad nauseum on this board. If your kid pays attention is poorly as you do to the arguments here, it really doesn't matter if they are in school or not.

The rates are going to go down in a few months. If we don't talk seriously about reopening now, schools will NEVER reopen. Which is untenable. At this point, we need to be talking not only about getting kids back to school at the earliest possible moment, but also a Marshall Plan for remediating all the learning loss.

I 100% don't buy it. The reasons schools are closed here is politics (appease teacher's unions) not science. As much as you wish there were not thousands of kids in school safely IN THIS AREA as we speak, it's a fact. It's an extremely persuasive fact that completely undermines you.

Literally every health expert thinks schools should reopen. This is not a "handful" of voices. The only ones against it are teachers' unions.

Wrong.

1. DH and I are in the field. NO ONE we know think schools should open at this time.
2. There was some talk during the summer of opening schools. At the time the nation was not in a death spiral. Pay attention to timing of interviews or articles.
3. There are certain professionals who seek media attention, and may choose to take click-bait views. Remember that they do not talk for their profession.
