Husband is beginning to try to lose 60 lbs — how can I support him in this?

In addition to what others have said, it helps if you develop non food relating activities and pastimes that you enjoy together. If he enjoys exercise, there are tons of options. I know a lot but of people who do CrossFit with modifications as part of a get fit program.

Keep healthy meals handy so that if he and you are hungry, you are reaching for food that is healthy, nutritious and home made.

Plan the healthy meals and grocery shop accordingly. Incorporating a lot of veggies and fruits means working out the logistics of shopping, putting away, prepping and using the fruits and produce.

Of course get rid of junk food, don't buy junk food and don't eat junk food.

Use spices and herbs to make healthy foods delicious.

Luckily he isn’t really a snacker or nighttime eater, and we don’t really have junk food in the house. He’s not someone who eats super unhealthy foods.

To be honest with you, I think he’s just someone who has a really bad metabolism. In the past, when he’s lost a lot of weight and kept it off for a little while, it’s been with intense exercise (like 6-mile runs 6 days a week).

This latest weight gain came in part because he stopped exercising when we had our daughter and then injured himself twice when he tried to start back up with running. He has a long history of being a solid runner, so it’s his go to exercise, and now I think he’s scared to start again, for fear of hurting himself again.

I’ve encouraged him to see a physical trainer, but I think he’s embarrassed. Instead, he’s been going on very long power walks. I know that’s not enough, but I think we’re going to have to take this whole thing one step at a time.

You know your husband best but just throwing this out there...my husband is a secret eater and until he opened up to me about his emotional eating, I had no idea. I couldn’t figure out why he always carried extra weight despite working out regularly and eating mostly healthy. Turns out he was eating a lot of snacks and extra portions at work or school and I just didn’t know. He didn’t open up until he was in therapy for a different issue.
