Warning for VA Dems

Anonymous
Anyone notice the referendum results in several VA counties regarding the movement of confederate statues? They all failed to pass. Scary.

+1. Schools are already allowed to open. OP, please explain exactly what the governor should do to force schools open.

Personally I think it can be solved with money: rent more temporary classroom space, hire more teachers. But neither Northam not the Dems in Richmond have the power to provide that money.

Northampton should be holding a press conference every week sharing the failing of virtual school. This is a major public health crises for our kids and loss of learning is astounding. He is putting zero pressure on the schools to open. He should cut any schools budget by refusing state $ unless they are open for in-person school. Are you really this unimaginative at your day job? There is a LOT he could be doing to pressure/influence decisions.

I’m the op and a very liberal dem. I’ve lobbied in Richmond for gun control so it make me so sad the current state of affairs. BUT my kids need school 5 days a week. I’ll hold my nose and vote for the Gov and party that will do that.

you'd have to rewrite state law to give the governor that power over local school boards- do you really think that conservative republicans, worry of population growth in NOVA tipping state power permanently in the future, are going to support a measure that removes that autonomy and hands it to the governor?

Are you saying the gov doesn’t have the power to order schools open? I get local districts have a lot of power over curriculum, instruction, calendars, etc. but northam was able to shut all schools. At APS SB meetings, Duran has said the only one that could overrule his decisions was northam. Is that not right? Genuinely asking.

he can shut them as a health measure, he can allow them to open. He cannot force them to open

It's amazing how many people don't understand this.

There is a LOT more he could be doing and should have done. He didn’t even speak a word a about schools after his july press conference where he gave them authority to open. He needed to be pressuring schools to open and encouraging a long winter break when everyone knew would have a spike in cases. He has done an abysmal job w advising schools or flexing his political muscles on the issue.

It's amazing how many people don't understand this.

Schools are delegated to local authority. The governor is respecting that. It's amazing how many people want him to take a more authoritarian stance

Why is it surprising? My kids are flailing at home and basically haven’t learned a damn thing since March. Is it too much to ask the governor to acknowledge that kids being out of school is a public crisis with its own set of harms. He has said next to nothing since his announcement IN JULY that schools can open. I’m a D and am so fed up w this nonsense w the schools. Why are indooor bars open and not schools? It makes no sense that our children are bearing the brunt of the burdens when they have the smallest risk. When can we stop pretending that DL is working for our youngest learners. Bravo to the small minority making it work. The rest of our kids, especially non-readers, are being left tragically behind.

Oh honey, "bless your heart" is not the insult you think it is.

People who say “bless your heart” are haughty, Old South closet racists / aspiring Stepford Wives trying to be ironic. Either way, you’re a terrible person if you use it sincerely or otherwise.

This is so dumb. Teachers will quit or strike, the outbreak will spread, and schools will stay closed longer. We are where we are until we aren’t. Get a nanny.

Have you people never heard of a SCHEDULE?!? My husband is an entrepreneur and up til 2-3 am most nights, I’m an attorney working from
home and our 6&2 year olds are thriving. My almost 3 year old is reading short words, my 6 year old has taken up baking, started a garden, is on a 5th grade reading level and a 4th grade math.

I genuinely understand high pressure jobs, I do. What I don’t understand is leaving your kids to flail. Even if they’re extroverted, make virtual play dates, give them a schedule to which they contribute and cut screen time outside of school.

It’s not too late to turn it around.

The teachers threads have proven to be pretty empty so far. Come fall, school will open 5 days a week.
