Warning for VA Dems

If Northam and the Dems in Richmond can't find the will to order schools to open 5 days a week by next fall, say goodbye to Richmond! You'll be handing over the keys to the republicans. They only need one item on their platform: a promise to order the schools open. Get ready!

I think this will prove to be true across states nationwide.

I’m the op and a very liberal dem. I’ve lobbied in Richmond for gun control so it make me so sad the current state of affairs. BUT my kids need school 5 days a week. I’ll hold my nose and vote for the Gov and party that will do that.

you'd have to rewrite state law to give the governor that power over local school boards- do you really think that conservative republicans, worry of population growth in NOVA tipping state power permanently in the future, are going to support a measure that removes that autonomy and hands it to the governor?

Are you saying the gov doesn’t have the power to order schools open? I get local districts have a lot of power over curriculum, instruction, calendars, etc. but northam was able to shut all schools. At APS SB meetings, Duran has said the only one that could overrule his decisions was northam. Is that not right? Genuinely asking.

he can shut them as a health measure, he can allow them to open. He cannot force them to open

But schools being closed are also a health measure - increased suicides, child abuse, learning loss, etc. I think if there was a will he absolutely could do it. The superintendent continues to say in meetings that the governor is the only one that can overrule him.

Oh honey, bless your heart. Schools are opening here soon and nobody is sending their kids in person. Almost everyone is SAHM, mathnesium is open so why bother. Also, the red exurbs just turned blue, so good luck.

You can’t force the teachers to work, that’s the whole issue. Many of them can quit if schools are forced to open. I’m a parent and I do think schools should be open, but staffing is a problem.

In FCPS we’re sending our kids back.

Oh honey, "bless your heart" is not the insult you think it is.

The premise of this whole thread is just preposterous and simply a figment of the OP's imagination.
