Obama a no-show at the Opening Ceremony?

uh, we had an Olympic bid to support last year, and he got bashed for going there. The head of the RNC moaned about how he was ignoring the threat to our soldiers in Afghanistan, and why wasn't he there to work on health care (as if the Republicans were actually going to do anything on that) and of course he had to make digs about how Obama was ignoring all those unemployed people back home. And the meeting was in Copenhagen on his way back from his middle east trip.

Sorry, but it's not fair to play both sides of this.

I think it was a good thing he didn't go because it would have taken attention away from the Canadian officials who were there and were hosting the event.

Speaking of Canadian officials, how about the Governor General? She was stunning! Last thing I expected was a Haitian-born woman as Governor General of Canada.

Canada is our neighbor, ally, one of our largest trading partners, and the biggest exporter to the US of oil. If Obama can bow to the king of Saudi Arabia the least he could do is go to the Opening Ceremony to one of our neighboring countries.

I seriously doubt that Canada is going to be hurt. But thanks for looking out for them. I'm sure they appreciate it.

According to this, the only president to attend an olympics on foreign soil was GWB:

http://www.american-presidents.org/2008/08/first-american-president-at-olympics-on.html

So it is hardly expected of him to go.

I guess Reagan really must have screwed up when he didn't show in Canada in 1988. But Canada was much farther away back then.

Reagan!

I guess I should have said "If Reagan can give a cake to Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran the least he can do is to go to the Opening Ceremony to one of our neighboring countries". Except that maybe it would have more punch if I said "missiles" instead of "cake". I go back and forth on that one.

Summer of 1976, Montreal Olympics, Gerald Ford president, no show at the olympics. How dare he not support our Canadian, high trading partners. Darn, he was a Republican and Republicans always, always conveniently forget what they themselves do, but accuse others of doing.

There are security issues.

With GWB, the secret service must not have been too worried. Cheney, however, they kept in a cave. Guess we know who was calling the shots in that relationship.

Exactly. And it's much less press when Biden's motorcade get in an accident - AGAIN! His local detail isn't as reckless, but they love to travel during rush hour.

It's just like a liberal to talk about Bush when a question is raised about Obama. The fact is that Obama has a thin skin. He was blown off by the Olympics and now he is returning the favor. If he had been tested during the campaign (like Hillary), it would have ben apparent.

The original poster brought up past presidents. It's just like a conservative to suggest that liberals can't do something that conservatives have done.

It's also just like a conservative to ignore the fact that Obama ran in, and was tested in, the exact same campaign as Hillary. I don't recall Hillary having to deal with issues such as her minister being taped saying things like "God damn America".

Finally, as other posters have pointed out, if Obama had gone to the Olympics, you would have been here criticizing him for that.
