“Vigil” for TJ This Weekend

I think this is eventually where TJ is headed. Resources are becoming scarce and many people want TJ turned back into a neighborhood
school to serve the community rather than the 1-3%ers.

I think the lottery or whatever happens to the admissions process is just a step in that direction. TJ has its own diploma with extra (summer school required classes). When many lottery students cannot keep up, as we have seen in honors classes and gen Ed, requirements will be reduced. And TJ will become just another neighborhood school.

That would be an excellent outcome. TJ was not originally built or funded to be a school for the arrogant kids of stuck-up 1-3%-ers.

I oppose the lottery. Especially the way it was hurried through. The school board and Brabrand are pandering to the mob.

That said, this Vigil is incredibly in bad taste. I understand their opposition to lottery. I understand many good students might not be able to get into TJ due to changes.

But why get upset about TJ potentially losing #1? This underlines their thought process.

Prestige.

They cannot stand the fact that they might not be able to say that their kid attended the top HS in US.

It is parents who are upset that their bragging rights are being taken away.

FCPS should not be denied the most efficient use of the building just because obnoxious TJ parents have been living vicariously through their kids.

I know a few of the people who are planning to attend the vigil. They are nice people. But when it comes to TJ, it is like they belong to a cult.

Any chance these people will pack up and leave after their “‘vigil” is done?

Competition does not short-change those who don't win.

“Show Our Grief! Show Our Pain!
Show Our Love! Show Our Pride”

Not to mention “bring your medals, trophies and posters.” Please, no. That sheit needs to stay at home.

It all sounds like some sad rally that Kim Jong-un would force the unfortunate denizens of the DPR to attend.

Hope they also bring copies of an upcoming admission test to share.

Feels like our current political climate - both sides of the issue have an emotional, vocal fringe that drowns out any productive discussion and any ability to acknowledge and rationally discuss pros and cons of any proposed plans. Depressing. Reform is needed.

The issue is only one side is using facts and data. Going to a random lottery will increase whites and decrease asians and have a negligible impact on URM.

There is common ground on getting more URM but a random lottery after watered down entry gates 3.5 GPA etc is not the way to go.

According to Asra Nomani, “We will lose the STEM in our STEM high school, we will lose the gifts in our gifted education.”

She is a terrible person and needs to be called out for her constant stream of hateful, racist comments.

The vigil and most of the views of the group are ignorant, embarrassing and flat out wrong. What TJ has become is so far from the original intent and character of the school back in the 90s. I would not want my children to attend now, although I loved my experience there. Diversity was an issue then and it has become a crisis that needs immediate, bold action. Otherwise it pains me to say that I believe TJ should be shut down because it is not serving its students nor the community.

Oh great, another white person telling us how bad it is that a school is majority Asian American.

TJ parents are in their own little bubble...oblivious to everything else going on in the world and living through their kids.

They don't care about diversity, human rights, or anything that would take their focus away from their view of meritocracy and "the American Dream".

The world is falling apart around them and all they care is whether or not they get to put a TJ sticker on their car. What a shame!

No, they care about being discriminated against and despised because of their drive and hard work. There is no disputing that these ambitious, hard-working children are an important part of the future of this country and should be celebrated and supported for their effort and not crapped on by people like you.
